Book Description

January 15, 1999
This is an audiocassette and map packaged like an audiobook. The audio describes places that Margaret Mitchell knew and the legendary Atlanta that she helped create. Follow the map and the audio directions to tour beautiful neighborhoods while you experience Margaret Mitchell's life and hear her descriptions of it. The tour begins by the Margaret Mitchell House and ends at her gravesite at Oakland Cemetery. Along the way, view her homes, and her haunts, and see some of the Civil War battlefields which formed the backdrop for Gone with the Wind.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A new audiocassette tape leads listeners on a 12-mile tour of sites associated with the author of "Gone With the Wind." The drive starts at the Margaret Mitchell House, the Midtown apartment where she wrote most of the 1936 novel, and ends in Oakland Cemetery. In between, the route passes the spot where she was fatally struck by a car in 1949(Peachtree Street near 13th Street), the site of the fiercest fighting during the Battle of Atlanta (next to what is now the Candler Park MARTA station) and the hotel where most of the GWTW premier festivities took place (the Georgian Terrace). Along the way, Mitchell's own words - read by another - provide much of the lively narration. She could be quite irreverent. Of her debutante party, for instance, she says, "did you ever see so many horse-faced people in your life?" -- Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Sunday, April 4, 1999

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating depiction of the life of Margaret Mitchell, October 27, 1999

This review is from: Margaret Mitchell's Atlanta: An Audio Driving Tour (Audio CD)
This is a fascinating depiction of the life of Margaret Mitchell within the context of an Atlanta that is far more sophisticated and complicated than when she lived there. As you begin your drive you go from the newly renovated Margaret Mitchell house (which is also fun for a tour) down Peachtree Street, past the Georgian Terrace and into less modern areas of the city until you end at her grave at the Oakland Cemetary. It is really moving when you finally drive up and park and listen to the final words of the tape. I loved the tape of the Battle of Peachtree Creek and I love this one--both because you really see the city in a multi-faceted way; both from a historical and a contemporary perspective. This is particularly effective with Margaret Mitchell who loved Atlanta and lived and died here. The stories and quotes which you listen to on the tape bring you close to a real Margaret Mitchell not just the legendary figure who wrote Gone With The Wind. This is just a great way to follow her personal history and see the places where she lived and died. Definitely a must do for fans of Margaret Mitchell as well as those who are curious to see Atlanta within a broad spectrum of its architecture and its history.
