Margaret With The Red Book is a layered study of lower class women's subservient role in men's lives in a budding industrial city. Through the main theme of Margaret and John, the tragic lives of six women and a carriage driver in a high class brothel are told with tender care and sensitivity by Margaret, herself a victim of a drunken noble. When the Milton paper carried a titled search for a Miss Margaret Hale of Milton, everyone was intrigued including the stalwart Mr. John Thornton. By happenstance, John, with out knowing her, saw Margaret at the brothel, owned by an acquaintance. With peaked curiosity, John was beside himself when he saw that Miss Hale's envoy was the brothel's owner.Imagine a Lord of the realm in a working city, working gentlemen in top hats and ladies of known and unknown virtues embroiled in a struggle for love, glory and survival.

I thought the book was not up to par with the other books by Loyal. I was not expecting John and Margaret to be so dishonored by the author. I do not believe either of their characters would have ever acted that way, or been in a brothel. I was very disappointed by the book. I had a tough time finishing it. The book was not to my liking. I am sorry. I love the John and Margaret characters. I feel like I wasted my money.

I haven't finished this book and may not bother. It is riddled with historical inaccuracies and is badly in need of an editor's firm guidance. That guidance should begin with the correct, British, usage of "shall" and "will." The sphygmomanometer was not invented until the late 19th century, but Dr Donaldson is seen somehow measuring Margaret's blood pressure. The principle characters are inconsistent and sometimes unbelievable. The stories of the "girls" are the best part of the book for me, so far. I gave the book 2 stars for originality. It might have been better written as "alternate universe" and set in the 20th century as the behaviors of the characters seem out of place in the setting of Victorian England.

With a weak plot, lightly developed characters, and poor editing and proofreading, this book isn't worth the time needed to read it. The author's appallingly bad grammar, total ignorance of use of the apostrophe, incoherent sentences, unerring skill for using the wrong word--accept/except, then/than, peek, peak, pique, it's/its, rain/rein/reign, to name a few--were so distracting that the only reason I kept reading was to see how much violence to the English language she would commit on the next page. This book does not deserve to be mentioned in company with Elizabeth Gaskell's original.
