Book Description

July 1, 1997 Britt Montero Mysteries
A film crew is shooting an action movie on location - but more than one real killer is on the loose. A handsome film star walks into the newsroom - and Britt's life - to research his role as a government agent under deep cover as a reporter.

But soon he needs Britt to run cover for him - as an obsessive stalker pursues the pair from the movie set to the city streets and to Los Angeles. But is the stalker the only one with murder on the mind? It's a story within a story, whose climax - deep within the bowels of the newspaper's vast press room - is deadly.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Miami police reporter Britt Montero is unwillingly assigned a task most would relish?teaching a famous action-movie actor the ropes of the business to help him prepare for his role in the upcoming film Margin of Error. Despite being all business, Britt nevertheless becomes romantically involved with Lance and then finds her own life in danger as a deranged fan's stalkings become increasingly violent. Although timely and intriguing, the plot unravels at a snail's pace, with implausible developments, an excess of subplots, and gratuitous sex, which is more clinical than provocative. In addition, the "telephone" sound effect is annoying rather than authentic, although reader Sandra Burr handles the many characters with subtle yet distinctive voice changes. Buchanan would have served her audience better by sticking to the mystery rather than the "romance" of this tale.?Susan McCaffrey, Sturgis Middle Sch., Mich.

From Booklist

Years of covering murders in Miami didn't prepare reporter Britt Montero for the lingering depression she felt after being forced to kill someone herself. Her editor decides the perfect antidote would be some "light" duty--showing movie star Lance Westfell, in town for a film, what being an investigative reporter is all about. The "light" duty merits hazard pay. The film is cursed from the start: ex-wives, botched stunts, and an obsessive fan all cause problems, and the growing relationship between Britt and Lance only exacerbates matters. Despite the show-biz flash, this fifth Montero mystery is mildly disappointing. The plot is slow to unfold, and there are too many sidebar excursions into unrelated Miami mayhem. On the positive side is Britt's continued growth as a character. She reveals a sensual side in her relationship with Lance, and she uses that life-connection to work through the guilt that led to her "light" assignment. On balance, this is an enjoyable enough novel but not quite up to the lofty standards Buchanan has set for herself and Britt. 4.0 out of 5 stars Miami, Murder, Movies & Mayhem, July 17, 2000
Truly the author has tied up all the necessary components in this novel set in a Miami that is beautifully diagrammed. Britt, a crime reporter, has her back up most the time but slides into a more human role about halfway into the book. The story weaves through the setting, crimes and a movie in a starkly lovely way, meeting some pretty weird folks. A bit different, but a good tight story. I listened to the unabridged audio, and thought the reader was well suited to the Britt character and did an admirable job on voice changes as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Filming Makes Real, January 25, 2009
This review is from: Margin of Error (Paperback)
Brett Montero awakens to the smell of gunpowder, the residue of memory of a horrible night. She knows following her beat and writing her stories is the best therapy for recovery from the past, but somehow her subconscious will not listen.
Her beloved Miami is slowly recovering from the devastating effects of a hurricane. To garner the exotic a real movie star is about the begin an action film, the first shot in the city since the storm.
Miami has two sides, the playground and the underworld where danger lurks around every corner, it isn't a place for the unwary.

If you know Miami this one has it all - beaches, the everglades, parties, a movie crew, gangs, drive-bys, sex and murder for hire. A quick read with characters you might have met. Britt makes a case for reporters who care about the victim, too bad she's fictional.
