This movie is by the noted documentarian, Tony Palmer. It presents the extraordinary life of the dancer, Dame Margot Fonteyn, who was considered to be the most lyrically beautiful ballet dancer of the 20th century. She was an international star, as beloved in the U.S. as she was in her native England. She started seriously dancing while a talented teenager in the mid-1930s and did not actually retire until 1979, at the age of 60. She was considering retirement in the early 1960s when she met the recently defected star of the Kirov Ballet, the young (23) Russian Rudolf Nureyev. The two became a team of astonishing grace and beauty and international superstars, dancing sold-out performances all over the world. This compelling film traces her life from the very beginnings to its lonely and tragic end in 1991. As Mr. Palmer suggests, you can't make this stuff up. Note: Frederick Ashton was her primary choreographer.

The most beautiful ballerina London has ever produced, Margot Fonteyn was,and still is,
a mystery to us all. From the time her ambitious Mother, BQ took her for 'deportment'
lessons, until the day she died, Margot has remained a question. She claimed she
didn't like ballet. She liked 'stomping around in heeled shoes, and banging a tamborine, But little by little she met the teachers who would inspire her to 'love the ballet steps' and eventually become one of the most famous ballerinas of our time. She was 'sweet, yet stubborn, hsughty, yet kind. She was a sort of 'blank page' that many poeple wrote on. When it came time to make a decision, if she didn't like it, it would 'go into a box and get put away.'Her many lovers, her husband, and of course Nureyev, all were secondary to her art. Even close to the end of her life she wrote a short story about a danacing bear who said 'grace and beauty soothe the soul.' We will have to wait a long time to see another Fonteyn. And in the meantime, if you are a ballet 'nut' as I am, you will enjoy this dvd immenseley.

A very good biography with clips of Margot Fontane (not her given name) over the years, supplemented with interviews of ballet music conductors, friends, and a biographer with the music played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and with The Glyndebourne Chorus. Not to be missed, as this prima ballerina had the notoriety of Churchill during her many years of dancing. (She last danced at age 67 when she could hardly walk.)
