This review is from: Margot at the Wedding (Audio CD)
I got this soundtrack after really enjoying the film "Margot At The Wedding" and having several of the songs from the movie catch my ear. This soundtrack is very well paced in terms of the order of the songs, and although the genres of music are fairly diverse the transition from song to song never struck me as jarring. There is a good mix of both alternative and classic rock on this disc, with bands like Blondie and Alice Cooper interspersed with X and Dinosaur Jr., but there is also a lot of music here that is more pop oriented, such as the 70's hit "On And On" by Stephen Bishop. In my opinion, this diversity helped this collection rather than hurt it and made for an interesting listen. Two of the acoustic songs on this disc are my favorites: Jorma Kaukonen's "Genesis", (which features an excellent guitar part as well as a beautifully wistful vocal), and Donovan's "Teen Angel", which plays over the movie's credits. I also have to comment that as a long time fan of Karen Dalton, I think Noah Baumbach's habit of either mentioning Karen Dalton or featuring her music in two of his movies is pretty cool. (There is a reference to her music in "Greenberg", and her song "Something On Your Mind" is on this soundtrack.) "Something On Your Mind" is probably my favorite song of Dalton's, and is a great choice as the closing song for this collection. Nick Cave has been quoted as saying that "Something On Your Mind" is the most extraordinary vocal he has ever heard, which pretty much says it all. I wouldn't recommend this soundtrack as an essential purchase for the casual listener, but if you enjoyed the music from the movie I wouldn't hesitate to get this.
