Book Description

August 10, 1997 1883294525 978-1883294526 1
In 1917, Marguerite Saltiel, an 18 year old reporter for L'Independant, a popular newspaper in Salonica, Greece, was involved in the adventure of wartime coverage on the Allied Eastern Front when a fire destroyed the Jewish quarter of the city and changed the course of her life.

The fire was the turning point in the life of a family that traced their history to medieval Spain and the expulsion of Jews who failed to convert to Christianity.

A valuable addition to the short list of titles on the subject. The section on life in the United States offers a rich description of a struggling family going through all of the vicissitudes and joys of life.

4.0 out of 5 stars A document of a rich and beautiful life, July 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Marguerite: Journey of a Sephardic Woman (Paperback)
She has documented the rich and beautiful life of a loved one who touched so many people. Stein illustrates in glowing detail not only who the Sephardic Jews are, but how they differ from other Jews and how they got from medieval Spain to the Balkans. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is the frequent use of Ladino (Judeo-Espanyol dialect), sayings in which Marguerite doled out her advice, wisdom or outlook on life. The sayings not only give the reader a sense of the protagonist, but also of the culture.
