Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-A readable, intriguing, and straightforward biography based on Trapp's own writings. The subject is portrayed as a spunky, fun-loving, and creative woman who endured difficult times and bravely faced adversity. Trapp's story is extended to include the musical career her family began in Europe and continued in the United States, as well as the music-camp business they created on their property in Vermont. Short chapters in a large-print format sprinkled with photographs make this an inviting and easily comprehensible biography. An author's note explains Ransom's research and her approach to writing this work.

From Booklist

Gr. 4-6. This book in the Trailblazers Biographies series presents an admiring portrait of Maria von Trapp, whose life inspired the Broadway musical, later a movie, The Sound of Music. Beginning with her austere childhood, Ransom traces von Trapp's life in Austria and in America, where she toured extensively with her family of singers and later set up a camp and ski lodge in Vermont. Clearly written and illustrated with black-and-white photographs, the book gives a sense of Maria's forceful personality as well as the events in her life. An author's note, a chronology, a bibliography, and source notes are appended. Recommended for Sound of Music fans who want to know what really happened and, of course, what happened next. 5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful biography, even for an adult, October 8, 2002

This review is from: Maria Von Trapp: Beyond the Sound of Music (Trailblazer Biographies) (Hardcover)
Although I am a senior adult, I thoroughly enjoyed this biography. I often preread books that I wish to share with my grandchildren. I had often wondered how Maria had come to the convent in the first place and this book takes one back to her early beginnings before that point and then leads one on from there. The book is a fast and enjoyable read. I recommend it heartily!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting biography of a remarkable woman, May 5, 2010
This review is from: Maria Von Trapp: Beyond the Sound of Music (Trailblazer Biographies) (Hardcover)
Maria Von Trapp whose love of music formed the premise of the classic movie The Sound of Music (Two-Disc 40th Anniversary Special Edition) was truly a remarkable woman who led an extraordinary life. Having lost her mother at a young age, Maria was cared for by a foster mother. Though Maria had a father, he was distant and when he died prematurely, Maria found herself at the mercy of relatives once again, taken in by her foster mother's daughter and husband, a stern man who was a judge. Maria's time with these foster parents was marked by unhappiness and Maria suffered physical abuse at the hands of the judge (for imagined transgressions). Eventually, Maria rebelled and left the judge's home, and enrolled in a Teacher's Training College. Then, a unique experience whilst hiking the mountains convinced Maria that her true calling was to serve God and she joined an abbey. Maria's love for teaching and music is described at length here, though she is later sent away to serve as governess to Baron Von Trapp's ailing daughter, one of seven children. Maria wins the affections of the children and after some time, marries the Baron.

The book also describes the Nazi occupation of Austria and how this serves as a catalyst that changes the lives of the Von Trapp family. The family eventually make their way to America and use their musical talents (nurtured by Maria) as a means to earn a living. Maria Von Trapp was a woman of remarkable talents - a musical performer, an entrepreneur, a writer, and above all, a devoted mother and wife. She is truly an inspiration! This biography is appropriate for children in the upper elementary levels and up.
