5.0 out of 5 stars Slowly-paced, dramatic series - but worth the patience., September 22, 2009

This review is from: Maria Watches Over Us: Season Three (DVD)
Maria Watches Over Us Season 3 is much like the previous two seasons of Maria. The show is very leisurely, and very "feminine." There isn't a lot of action. Lots of talking. No sword/gun fights, explosions, or gratuitous fan service here. Look to My-HiME for that.

Maria, however, is a very carefully developed, well-written series. It exists entirely in its own dimension, it's very overdramatic - i.e. failing to make a good impression on another character could be the end of the world. The artwork, as in the previous two seasons is excellent, and the soundtrack is refined. Calming, classical compositions that fit the mood of the series perfectly. The voice acting is also wonderful. The specials are a nice bonus, but they aren't as good as those of the previous seasons.

As with the first two seasons, the dilemmas faced by the characters involve one another, and Yumi, the protagonist, is constantly fretting over pleasing Sachiko. Season 3 is much more focused on Yumi+Sachiko, and developing their relationship, so if the pairing annoyed you before, then this isn't going to be your favorite season. For me, as much as I find Yumi slightly annoying, she's hard to dislike - though she grows a little more irritating this season. On the other hand, we learn more about Sachiko's character and she becomes more "bearable." The third season definitely has some moments that will go down in Maria history as classics, I'm sure including one involving a panda.

What is nice about Maria is that it handles girlxgirl romance with a subtle class and delicacy that is lacking in many other shows, which tend to sensationalize the sexuality of the characters. Maria Watches Over Us isn't an extremely "exciting," action-filled show, but the care and sensitivity with which it treats its characters and subject matter is a breath of fresh air that makes it engrossing in its own right.

For those who are new to the series, this is a good place to start, though I would recommend watching the previous two seasons to familiarize yourself with the characters and soeur system. If you enjoyed the first two, then Season 3 is a good bet.

Highly recommended.

Trust me if you want a good clean wholesome story buy this. Great for adults/young adults. A must see for a drama fanatic.

Warning this is only in Japanese with english subtitles, but like I said earlier it is well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner, January 30, 2010

This review is from: Maria Watches Over Us: Season Three (DVD)
I have seen and own both Seasons 1 & 2 of Maria watch over us, Season 3 has not disappointed me although I wish the there were more OVA episodes at least they are an hour long. I am happy the way characters have developed and grown if the had just stood still I would not have waste my time or effort to buy this series. I was most impressed that a larger amount of time was spent away from school and viewing their lives in the real world not to mention meeting the parents. I cannot wait for season 4 to be released and I hope that it will be this year I will buy it without a doubt. I hope [...] reads this review! "And takes the hint." I have to say that if they re-release the series with an English dub I will have to seriously consider purchasing it to compare the voice acting.
