Editorial Reviews

In 2008, hardcore punk band, The Bronx, diverted from their usual hard rock sound in favor of a mariachi style that is very much a part of the Mexican culture surrounding their hometown, Los Angeles.

In June 2008 the band posted a video on YouTube of themselves performing their original Cell mates in mariachi style under the name Mariachi El Bronx.

From that moment on, The Bronx has moved forward on a dual career path with Mariachi El Bronx issuing their critically acclaimed self titled debut album and touring the world.

Slide to August 2011, and the band continues their trailblazing path with their brand new release, Mariachi El Bronx (II). Produced by John Avila (Oingo Boingo, Reel Big Fish). There is no way in anyone would expect a Mariachi album recorded by some LA punks to be this good, let alone great. Flying far above novelty, Mariachi El Bronx brings us one of this year s most welcome surprises. If only more bands would flex their creative muscle in the ways that The Bronx have on their new release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love listening to this - great fun! August 2, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Heard a review of this album on NPR and immediately wanted to get it after hearing just a few song clips. I'm not actually a fan of Bronx in their punk mode, but am really enjoying this album. It follows authentic mariachi rules, but makes it a lot more palatable for those who weren't raised in that tradition. The bottom line is that it's just fun! The rhythms and orchestration in particular make this so enjoyable. I've got it on a constant loop on my laptop and it's made my day in the office that much more enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Certain Grammy Nominees August 12, 2011

Discovered Mariachi El Bronx listening to KEXP in Seattle. Not being a Mariachi devotee I was taken by the back-story... punk band branches out into new genre of music, but how good could they be....well these guys are nothing short of amazing. Bronx II is a rich and powerful mix of ballads and uptempo sounds and lyrics that you have to experience to appreciate. No cheese here, just a unique, contemporary take on music that will literally transport you. If you like novel, refreshing music, check out Mariachi El Bronx.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised how much I liked this September 30, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I'm not a huge fan of Mariachi music, so I was hesitant to buy this. But, they're opening for the
Foo Fighters, so I wanted to know whether or not I could be late.

I LOVE this recording! Yes, it's mariachi music, but it's more.

The stories told by the lyrics are, life, love.

I would highly recommend this to anyone! Listen with an open mind. You won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING?? October 7, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Not even vaguely familiar with the whole "punk" thing, I read the reviews and thought this would be like "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes". I was expecting a sociological train wreck. I will be the first to admit that I was so wrong. These guys can play. I alternated between Mariachi Divas and El Bronx II. the Mariachi stylings are paralleled from bass to brass. The rhythm changes never lost a bit of traction and the whole flavor has me gorging on Norteno lights, The devils in the sunrise. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! July 16, 2013
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
A great record. Better than their first! 48 Roses is hilarious. Revolution Girls is beautiful! And the instrumental team up with Mariachi Del Reyna is a blast! On par with, and similar in many ways to If I Should Fall From Grace With God by The Pogues. I know, it sounds strange to compare Mexican Mariachi album by A Los Angeles Punk band to a great Semi TRADITONAL Irish Music record by a former London Punk Band. But dig deep and its there. Brilliant.

This is a runaway talent in 2011. It's great music with fantastic lyrics by a band who has truly found their muse south of the border. Great CD!

Better then I expected. The bling on the front cover doesn't do it justice - it is not a rap group.
