5.0 out of 5 stars Dreamy Mood Music
Mariah Carey is perhaps one of the most beautiful creatures God has ever created. Her sweet sexy voice is so pure and beautiful. The music on this album is for the true romantic.

The first CD is more intense yet still has some very romantic songs, while the second is much deeper and emotional overall.

"Butterfly" is still my favorite song...

2.0 out of 5 stars A Wasted Opportunity
Mariah's 'official' "Greatest Hits" was inevitible, albeit a little too soon after "#1's." Though the two sets were bound to overlap each other, "Greatest Hits" is an agonyzing disappointment for fans who had their hopes up for the ultimate Mariah Carey collection. The omissions are glaring; "Breakdown" is nowhere to be found,...

Mariah Carey is perhaps one of the most beautiful creatures God has ever created. Her sweet sexy voice is so pure and beautiful. The music on this album is for the true romantic.

The first CD is more intense yet still has some very romantic songs, while the second is much deeper and emotional overall.

"Butterfly" is still my favorite song because it speaks of how we are all individual souls that cannot be possessed. It always creates such beautiful images of a summer day and of the freedom to love without possessing. "My All" is highly emotional and one of the most evocative songs about longing I have ever heard.

"I'm thinking of you
In my sleepless solitude tonight
If its wrong to love you
Then my heart just won't let me be right
Cause I'm drowned in you..."

I saw her interviewed once when she was talking about helping children find families and I just thought what a beautiful soul she must be. The inner qualities she possesses seem to come out in her music.

I hope that no matter where life takes her, that she will always find enough unconditional love. It is the soul's deepest desire.

Mariah's voice is just amazing! If you buy only one of her albums, this one would be my recommendation. I would have
been happy without the bonus track.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Greatest' Covers Carey's Peak, December 12, 2001
By
Chris S. "cscotts" (atlanta, ga United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mariah Carey - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
While never accused of being a particularly meaningful song interpreter, Mariah Carey has nonethelesss produced some of the best pop of the last decade, the majority of which is presented here in this very generous twenty-eight song compilation. While her career is seemingly going even further south thanks to her unjustly criticized GLITTER album(and the accompanying flop of a movie), this is a good reminder of why, at her peak, few could come close to Carey's track record. While she was constantly prone to adult contemporary sap('I Don't Wanna Cry', the horrifically maudlin 'My All'--one of her worst records ever), she also produced a number of first-rate singles('Vision Of Love', 'Fantasy', 'Emotions'). Sixteen of the tracks are carry-overs from her previous 1'S collection(rendering that set pointless), along with tracks from RAINBOW, as well as a completely unnecessary remix of her holiday track 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'. Additionally, the set includes several of Carey's non-commercial singles(the sterling 'Forever', 'Butterfly'), as well as one of her best, most fully realized songs ever('Underneath the Stars', which was inexplicably never released). One minor omission her is that of 'Breakdown', one of the few highlights from her otherwise dreary BUTTERFLY album. Otherwise, this is a great way to filter through the cream of Carey's Sony years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah is a shining star, December 28, 2001
This review is from: Mariah Carey - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Mariah's Greatest Hits. Although, her latest albums "Glitter" and "Rainbow" are good I miss the classic Angelic ballads from her earlier work. I am dissappointed that Glitter didn't do as well as anticipated, and in fact, I don't really understand because overall it is a good album & the ballads are beautiful. However, I think all the rap/hip-hop in her most recent music is not benefiting her success, & instead it is aiding her in loosing her momentum. No matter what I will always love Mariah & her music, but she has to cool it with the rap sh... Some of it is okay, but enough is enough. The beauty in her songs & emotion is lost with the piercing/& sometimes annoying rap background vocals. Some of it just doesn't fit. However, in the song "Honey", the rap background is acceptable because it's funky, it "fits", & it's not overplayed. Ever since her music has been altered with hip-hop she seems to have lost the significance in her sound. Her song bird & Angelic voice is too beautiful, emotional, and meaningful to add the annoying repetative "hip-hop" nuisance. The songs story line & emotion is lost behind to much of the hip-hop. I must point out that I like how she has experimented with different sounds; such as, funk, dance, & pop - but the hip-hop/rap is becoming too much. Mariah - I still love you & you will always remain a singing sensation, but we want to hear more of your beautiful Angelic voice like in "Never to Far". Aside from all this, you are still a shining star in my book and I will always be a #1 fan. Furthermore, I respect the fact that Mariah does alot for charity & not only does she have the voice of an Angel, but also the heart of an Angel.

I've listened to Mariah for years, although had never purchased her music. I decided to purchase this CD mainly because of the positive reviews I read. I can say that I was not disappointed. The music is great and the sound is wonderdful to my ears. God Bless Mariah for years to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREATEST HITS covers Carey's career well, December 15, 2001
This review is from: Mariah Carey - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
It was only a matter of time before one of the most sucessful singers in the world (Mariah) put out a GREATEST HITS package. Now, this cd is excellent in covering Mariah's career from 1990-2000. It features 15 number one hits! Plus other top ten hits like "can't let go", "without you", "anytime you need a friend", "endless love" etc. Has there ever been an artist with a greatest hits collection that includes FIFTEEN number one hits on one album? I think not! So that alone proves Mariah's sucess and talent. Listening to GREATEST HITS will bring back memories. I'm sure that everyone knows at least ONE Mariah song so this is a great collection. My only problem with this collection is that "breakdown" and "the roof" didn't make the final cut. Also, no new tracks but it's no big deal. Mariah's GREATEST HITS is a landmark pop/r&b collection that everyone would enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah Carey's Greatest Hits, April 21, 2003
This review is from: Mariah Carey - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I "discovered" Mariah with her 14th #1 single, "Heartbreaker", in 1999. The only reason I'd never heard her before is that I was 10 and my mother didn't care for Mariah Carey's singing (still doesn't--she's crazy). I immediately bought "Rainbow" and was pleasantly surprised when I bought "#1's" at all of the material she has recorded. The CD collections of my sister and I now contain every album she has recorded to date, including duplicates of several. This album is an excellent collection, far better than "#1's", because many of Mariah's best songs did not go to the #1 position on the Hot 100 (although 15 did, giving her more #1 singles than any other woman, and, since the two who bested her--Elvis with 18 and the Beatles with 20--are no longer recording, she has a shot at the top spot). Among them are the cheesy but beautiful "Endless Love" cover and "Make it Happen", which I have never been able to listen to without saying "Wow". We are all familiar with her range, but this song is driven by her vocal power, which is amazing (and she was only 21 when this song was recorded!). This CD is an excellent CD, and it shows her awe-inducing career with Columbia Records. She was the most successful artist of the 90s, and "Greatest Hits" definitely proves why, but don't buy this CD if you don't like pop music. That's for the most part what it is, and it's just silly to buy a CD that you know you won't like and then complain that you don't like it. (Just had to say that.)

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful voice and amazing artist!, December 5, 2001
By
This review is from: Mariah Carey - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Mariah has a beautiful voice. She is always coming up with something new and interesting. And as for me and Mariah, we have our own "story"...

I was in love with a cute and beautiful little girl when I was 12 years old (19 now). I remember she loved Mariah Carey, Infact she was mad at her (:)). It was that time when "Music Box" came out and I realy wanted to surprise her with something that she will never forget, something that both of us will never forget...I started to listen to Mariah and discovered why she liked her so much...The vocals, the words, the fealings, the depth, and the soul : "And when a hero comes along.." I bet it reminds you some of the most beautiful times of your life! I sang this song to her and I won a small kiss!! And nowadays I realized that it was something much more deep than a kiss. Mariah exposed me to the music world! I became a true music fan that loves, feels and appreciates good music.

And as for this album, It's not everything about heros after all, Don't you think?? I have all mariah's albums after "Music Box" and everyone of them is unic and sparkling by itself, with each and every one of us's special song that was sang by miss Mariah : A 'Butterfly Diva'.

I recommend this "Greatest Hits" tittle for every music fan. Atlist take your time and listen to it. You'll find out an artist who is very talented and artistic in is own special and different way just like you! And of course 'A Must' for Mariah's fans who're looking for a good Hit-Box-Collection by Mariah!

Uriah.O.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Hope She Sees the Error of Her Ways, December 13, 2001
By
This review is from: Mariah Carey - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Mariah Carey was the biggest female songstress of the 90's. She had several hugely successful albums hit after hit (at least up until the "Butterfly" album.) This album is a great look back at her amazing career (although the first disk has most of the good stuff on it. Mariah worked for her success and her first album yielded 4 incredible hits (Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, Someday, and I Don't Wanna Cry) They were all huge on radio and commercially (all making it to #1) Mariah's 2nd album "Emotions" wasn't quite as successful as her first, but it was still a fantastic work churning out three of her best songs (Emotions, Can't Let Go (breathtaking), and Make It Happen) Yet again, all three were large on radio and commercially. Next came along her biggest acheivement yet "Music Box." Four fantastic singles followed (the 2 #1's "Dreamlover", "Hero", and the equally deserving "Anytime You Need A Friend" and "Without You." In '95, Mariah released yet another huge album "Daydream." "One Sweet Day" was one of the buggest songs in history and "Fantasy" and "Always Be My Baby" were also amazingly successful. "Forever" was also released off "Daydream" but never charted (which is beyond me cuz it's a fantastic song.)

Now...here's where Mariah began to falter. '97 and "Butterfly." She began to go into the hip-hop scene and radio quickly turned its back on her. "Honey" and "My All" went to #1 but only due to commercial releases. They both received lukewarm airplay. "Butterfly" never even charted. in '99 "Rainbow" was released which provided some amazing songs, but they were overshadowed by the hip-hop (...). "Heartbreaker" and "TGIFY" went to #1, but yet again, they released barely any airplay and only managed to cuz of commercial releases....

Mariah...go back to the music that brought u onto the scene. Don't waste your time with music that doesn't show off your amazing talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah Carey Surpasses Greatness, January 12, 2002

mc heartbreaker (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mariah Carey - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
First of all, I just want to say that people should review this product based on its content rather than Mariah's personal life. Anyways, this cd is in fact Mariah's greatest hits from her 10 years (1990-2000) with Columbia/Sony Records. Cd #1 is taken from "Mariah Carey" to "Daydream". Cd #1 contains some of Mariah's earlier hits such as "Vision Of Love", "Emotions" and "Dreamlover". This disc is great for everyone who loves to listen to ballads, since Mariah's earlier work is comprised mostly of ballads. Cd #2 contains Mariah's works from "Daydream" up to "Rainbow". Disc 2 is my personal favorite because it contains more upbeat songs than disc 1, such as "Honey", "Heartbreaker" and "Always Be My Baby". This disc also contains some of Mariah's strongest ballads like "One Sweet Day" a duet with Boyz II Men, "I Still Believe" and "Can't Take That Away". To sum it all up this greatest hits package has everything a music lover could ever want. It is a great cd for anyone who has just become a recent Mariah Carey fan since it spans her 10 years in the music industry. As for Mariah fanatics, this cd is a definate must have to add to your collection. In addition to "Greatest Hits" I would recommend Mariah's new cd "Glitter" which is also a must have for anyone! Mariah is truly a gifted singer/song writer/producer and people should focus on that rather than her personal life, the clothes she wears and who she is hanging out with. What matters most is the music and Mariah is definately one of the best singers in the world, who desevers more recognition and respect than she has received.

As a casual fan, for many years I just had her "1's" collection and figured it was enough. Well recently I got this "Greatest Hits" fairly cheap and quickly realized how much better it really is. Besides the inclusion of more tracks, I like this collection more for the songs that didn't reach the top of the charts. Some of the minor hits I like alot more than the #1 hits, specifically "Can't Let Go", "Make It Happen", and the cover of "Without You". I think my current favorite here is "Anytime You Need A Friend". That song is excellent, and is one of a few I had completely forgotten about. Another plus to this set is the inclusion of the songs from "Rainbow". In a perfect world this would also have "Breakdown" and "Against All Odds", but it's still an amazing package. The only other surprise to me was the lack of pictures. She usually gives us some nice shots, but not here.
