Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Pop vocalist Mariah Carey may be only 27, but in her young career she has already emerged as the biggest-selling female singer of the decade. In this insubstantial biography, celebrity chronicler Chris Nickson (Mariah Carey, Her Story, Vol. I) relates the pop diva's rags-to-riches story. Raised on Long Island by her opera singer mother, Carey moved to New York City at 17, working odd jobs until her big break came: at an industry party, she got her demo tape into the hands of Tommy Mottola, then head of CBS Columbia. Mottola signed Carey to Columbia, recruiting top studio musicians to help out on her debut album, Mariah Carey, and backing it with an expensive, high-profile marketing push. The album spent 22 consecutive weeks at the top of the charts, turning the 21-year-old singer into an immediate star. Carey's musical style has since evolved from sentimental pop ballads through the gospel-tinged "Unplugged" album, to her hip-hop collaborations with Sean "Puffy" Combs. And the hits just keep on coming. Since Nickson relies heavily on magazine articles and had no access to Carey, Mariahphiles will find few fresh insights into her life and music. Carey is depicted as a hardworking perfectionist who feels she has had to battle prejudice against her mixed race (African American, Venezuelan and Irish). Nickson's adoring prose makes clear that this is a book for fans only.

More About the Author

I'm the author of the Richard Nottingham books, historical mysteries set in Leeds in the 1730s and featuring Richard Nottingham, the Constable of the city, and his deputy, John Sedgwick. The books are about more than murder. They're about the people of Leeds and the way life was - which mean full of grinding poverty for all but the wealthy. They're also about families, Nottingham and his and Sedgwick, and the way relationships grow and change, as well as the politics, when there was one law for the rich, and another, much more brutal, for everyone else.

Why Leeds? It's where I was born and raised, and that puts a place in your bones. You know it the way you can never quite know anywhere else...

In addition to this I'm also a music journalist, reviewing for magazines and online outlets, something I've been doing since the mid 1990s, specializing these days in world and roots music.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ ABT MARIAH - MY INSPIRATION!, September 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mariah Carey Revisited: The Unauthorized Biography (Paperback)
As a BIG MC fan , this book is very detailed & chronicled the rise to fame of Mariah - her struggles & all the hard work she put into in every album. She is really a genius & a very gutsy lady yet very gentle. It would be so hard to find an artist as dedicated to his/her music as Mariah. Nobody does it like Mariah ... always imitated - never duplicated ! I'm going to give this book as gift to my friends in the music industry ... a very insightful & inspiring book. A must-read to everyone who wants to succeed & stay on the music business & be part of world history! Go Mariah !

This review is from: Mariah Carey Revisited: The Unauthorized Biography (Paperback)
This book had correct information and lots of useful content. The author researched Mariah very nicely and presented her in a positive way. He included pictures of mariah, a chronology, a discongraphy and awards. I would recommend this book to any Mariah Carey fan. I am Mariah's biggest fan, meaning I have read just about everything on Mariah and between all of the books about Mariah Carey, this was one of my favourites.
