Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It's refreshing to come across the unexpected. When it comes to rock star bios, one always fears another tale of depravity, excess, and mania. A nice story about a nice person who happens to have a superabundance of talent defies that expectation, and such a defiant story is pop diva Carey's, according to Nickson. In an era when the need for regular MTV play dictates that stars look as good as they sound, Carey is blessed with both looks and an incredible vocal range--a combination that often enough brings stardom, and that is essentially what the book is about. Carey's a star, and if you're interested in how she came to be but don't want the distractions of a lot of deep, boring stuff, Nickson's nice, inoffensive book is for you. Mike Tribby

5.0 out of 5 stars Butterfly, December 22, 1999
By Sherron (Washington,D.C.) - See all my reviews
I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked the book because it's like a rags to riches story. I also enjoyed the book because Mariah Carey is my favorite singer. Not only do I enjoy her music but I love how she care for the children, and has actually taken more than a few steps to help them. I would say that I was her #1 fan. Not an obsessed fan but more like a great admirer of her art. My review is named, Butterfly, because what I got from her story is that she struggled, went through some things, as we all do in life, worked hard, set a goal for herself, was determined, did so, and became the SUPERStar she is today. She's blossomed into this beautiful woman...a butterfly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nickson just doesn't cut it, April 28, 1999
By A Customer
Nickson, the author, doesn't cut to the chase right away in the biography of Mariah Carey. He starts of talking about her "Cindrella" lifestyle and then smoothly carries the reader away into statistics that bore. The facts on Ms. Carey are fairly accurate. Yet it's just not enough to interest Non-Mariah spectators.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fairly Good, September 4, 1998
By A Customer
This book was a good read, it was very interesting especially if you are a fan of Mariah's. The book is basically about her life from a kid until the middle of her carear. If you are intrested in learning about her childhood, rise to stardom and the people she works with this is the book for you. There are also some nice pictures in the middle, and a time line at the end.
