5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah at her best, January 28, 2009
This review is from: Mariah Carey in Japan DVD (DVD)
This DVD is a bootleg of Mariah's Daydream tour in Tokyo, Japan, 1996. Mariah's voice sounds amazing and she really gives her all in every performance. This is the Mariah that everyone fell in love with! I highly recommend this to any fan. The quality is great and I promise you won't be disappointed! A few tracks to take note of are "Underneath The Stars (gives me chills...it's THAT good) and "I Don't Wanna Cry" (she sings it different than the album version...simply amazing!).

FYI: You can buy this on Ebay.

This is Mariah at her best. Already a superstar with numerous #1 hits, she shows a sold-out Tokyo Dome why she deserved the recognition that she got with her first 4 or 5 CDs. Showing off her full 5 octave range and making it look effortless is no easy feat, but Mariah pulls it off. Loads of hits here, a great backup band and singers, Mariah shows everyone what virtuosity is all about.
This is, unfortunately, one of the last times that Mariah was able to perform with the full power and range of her incredible voice. Subsequent CDs and concerts show the strain and abuse of her voice. In later shows, she began singing with her "whisper" style voice. She still has the whistle range, and her lower range, but the awesome power and expression of her mid to high range is sadly gone now.
If for no other reason, any fan of Mariah's or of vocal virtuosity should own this CD to see how incredible her voice once sounded. This concert absolutely deserves 5 stars and is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic For Decades & Decades!, July 14, 2009
This review is from: Mariah Carey in Japan DVD (DVD)
As the Tokyo crowds are gathered waiting for Mariah Carey, she appears from above in a beautifully decorated lift that descends as the Daydream Interlude begins. Her first numbers are slow ballads like Emotions, Forever, I Don't Wanna Cry, and the most impacting of all Open Arms. Later she gives a more mid-tempo break with the song Forever, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby, One Sweet Day, and the Japanese most requested Underneath The Stars. After this segment and a few outfit changes from black to white pants outfit she then goes to her most notable sensational hits like Without You, Make It Happen with a stunning chorus and gospel type vibe that has soulfulness written all over it and Dreamlover.

My favorite performance is One Sweet Day with Boys II Men Legacy: The Greatest Hits Collection for the fact her vocals along the ones from Boys II Men are just so impacting. Never ever has Mariah sounded so fresh, vocally on the mark and just elegant, classy, and striking all in one. This was a classic concert moment. She wears a beautiful black dress with a white waist design that made the entire viewing even more memorable. Vision of Love was also very impacting with Hero following right after. In this song, she pours her heart out bringing the words to life. It's her message for her fans, crowds, and the entire world who will eventually see the concert. She shines, and delivers straight from the heart--once again this is another favorite to cherish and play over and over. Here she wears a black bell shaped dress very elegant and very distinctive unlike the ones from the other numbers.

The concert ends with Anytime You Need A Friend and All I Want For Christmas Is You plus an Interview segment right after --very brief. The vocals for Anytime I Need A Friend are also very true to the pitch of not harsh on the ears yet on the level to get across the beautiful meaning behind the song. The chorus also sings in the background in many numbers very nicely. There is of course dancers who also perform on the more up-tempo songs making it a very diverse viewing never tiring, boring, or predictable.

The Interview segment talks about why she took so long to do a tour and she explains that it has to do with her voice. They ask her about her voice range and notes. She mentions how she needs to rest in between shows and stay in bed to make sure she performs okay. The show was on March 7, 1996 at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. It's a region free disc with NTSC All on the back of the case. The picture quality is near perfect, the lights and stage are phenomenal, the angles of the camera are professionally done and Mariah looks better than she ever has in a very slim type figure, classy non-revealing clothes, and soft sweet youthful innocent look -with little make-up, no dramatic nail polish, and just a more down-to-earth Mariah. It's her classic hits with her most natural relaxed poised spiritual aura. She was definitely on the lines of the diva throne with her vocals never out of range, her voice never harsh, strained or annoying but most of all with love in her heart to give it her best--and it definitely showed!
