Marian Bantjes' work has always been phenomenal, but she's created a pure work of art in "Pretty Pictures." The book is hardbound, and quite large and heavy. Surprisingly, the cover you see in the Amazon photo isn't actually the book's front cover. It's a paper book cover, and printed in silver and red foil. It's highly reflective and absolutely gorgeous. Beneath that....well, I don't want to ruin the surprise.

Inside, Bantjes' collection provides a huge treasure trove of history and process, and is full of her frank and humorous writings and musings. The creativity and time that must have gone into this book's production is astounding.

Overall, it's an incredible addition to anyone's bookshelf.

A word of advice...because of the foil treatment, the book cover's surface damages fairly easily. Be sure to check the book as soon as it arrives. My first copy wasn't protected in the box and arrived damaged. The second copy was plastic wrapped and in perfect condition, but I still removed the book cover to keep it from being damaged.

I've been wanting for Marian to do her monograph ever since I have her book 'I Wonder'. And boy, did I get what I want. First of all it is a huge book. But it is necessary to accommodate the immense detail - almost obsessive nature of her work. Her writing in this book is very frank and honest - unlike 'I Wonder' where a lot of them are philosophical. She is her own critics, often mentioning: 'I hate this piece', 'This was poorly drawn', or 'Like a pile of poop' (I censored myself there). And even humor: 'I like this cover before they decided to add the text over it. Editors!' (I know how you feel, Marian)

With every page, I advise you to first just look at the title, then look at the artwork. Explore it. Try to read it. Decipher it. Figure it out what it was for. After that, then you can read the rationale. Most of it is like a challenge and resorting to her explanation took some of the fun out of it. It's like solving Where's Wally by the cheat sheet first.

In her works, she tries to push boundaries. She disintegrates alphabet almost beyond legibility. She's not always aim to please the eyes. Sometimes the images are downright grotesque (the sight of a pool of squirming earthworms still gives me goosebumps). But that what makes her exciting to follow. Stefan Sagmeister said that there are two kinds of artist. Those of produce similar looking works and those who keep reinventing themselves. And Marian is the latter kind.

As a designer myself, what I take away from the book is her way of thinking and solving the problem, not her style. It won't suit anyone to copy her style. One of epiphany I take is when she said: 'Everything I do, I do for love. I realized that as much as I wanted - needed - to make money, it was no longer the motivation for my work.

This book is AMAZING. Every single page is breathtaking. Pretty Pictures is one of the most exquisite, brilliant monographs ever created. Marian's work is magical, musical and mystical. This book contains EVERY SINGLE PROJECT she has worked on in her solo career and includes sketches, accepted, rejected and killed work, sumptuous photographs, and insightful commentary throughout. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the craft, process, passion and intellect inherent in design, art and life. It is quite simply a tour de force. BRAVO MARIAN!

Marian Bantjes is Inspiring in every way, in this book. No holds barred, Marian shows work that was both accepted and produced, and as well as rejected, and is honest enough to say what she thinks of her own work in retrospect.

This was a joy to get and read. It's beautiful, and her stories about the pieces-- especially the popular pieces of her own work that she tends to dislike-- are wonderful. Get it. If you work in design or with images, you won't be disappointed. I'm already looking forward to many re-readings and re-lookings.
