Photo books usually disappoint...,
By
This review is from: Marie Antoinette (Hardcover)
And they're usually expensive. They do this because producers know people will buy them... fans. When I bought this, I did it with the great expectation of having some of the most beautiful stills form this film. The thing is that the pictures that are on the internet, are so much better than the ones on this book. And they're kinda blurry! Or maybe is the paper but they do lack of the quality that other photo books from movies have.
I was hoping to see many of the stills that are available as wallpapers like the one of Marie holding a fan and Rose Byrne staring at her on the back... that picture rocks. Only a couple of photos are worthy of having them on this book. And of course, extracts from the script are written... well well... Generally, it is a disappontment. You might as well, download some great stills from the net and print them with much better quality.

1 and 2 star reviews for this book are not accurate!,
By
This review is from: Marie Antoinette (Hardcover)
In Cannes SOME of the critics didn't like the movie but the movie was graced with lots of cheers by its viewers. Once again, the masses aren't right. The story is innacurate - yes! could be, but this movie isn't focused on history!
In Marie Antoinette, we entered in a camp aesthetic world - forget about the history. There is also a pair of Converse All-star among the Antoinette's shoes... Good movie (although not terrific) and Sofia Coppola is already on another planet - she gets my attention for the fabulous camp aesthetique! The soundtrack is wonderful also! I bought this book - I normally buy movie books of the films I like. I was pleased with this book! 1 and 2 star reviews for this book are not accurate! 3 stars and half is fairer. It is beautifully presented, with 2 LOVELY varnished pictures on the baby-blue hardcover. It has beautiful photos by Director Sofia, Leigh Johnson and Lance Acord - some are better than others, obviously. But I prefer a less quality photo than not have none. There are also nice pictures from Asia Argento (Madame Du Barry), Marie Antoinette in the orchard near the Petit Trianon is marvellous. There are also sketches for the food castles and deserts. Even the very strong dustjacket is beautiful - all the lettering is engraved. The outside as seen on the picures is in powder-blue (fabric pattern) and the inside dustjacket in hot-pink. IF YOU LIKE THE MOVIE - you'll like this book. Believe me!

Poor Quality........High Price!!,

I am sure the movie will be great, but this companion/screenplay is quite lackluster. With such beautiful imagery you would think the book would be bursting with wonderful shots. Not the case. Small book, small blurry images. Little or no designs, making of, publicity shots, etc. Save your money!! Oh well....

I'm French so Marie-Antoinette is a part of my History! The book from the movie is simply incredible. Inside, you can see the script (in fact, not the total one but some good parts of if) and some beautiful pictures of the movie. I really love it :) So chic!

Unreal Disappointment of a Book, Exquisite Movie,
This review is from: Marie Antoinette (Hardcover)
This is the first real flame of a review I have ever written. I must preface this with this statement: I am in awe of S. Coppola's (S.C.) film work-and this movie is no exception...Marie Antoinette (M.A.) and her interpretation of the story is truly exquisite. The costuming is what I am really interested in, with re: to this book, however. I wanted this book for so long, and finally purchased it-ordered it and received it today. I also love Rizzoli (R.)-the publisher. Who, now, I am flabbergasted at-that they even published this. I should have listened to the sage advise of the other costume-philes before me. First, the sheer scale of the book is atrociously small (especially for Rizzoli-they usually publish great big books with great big, clear, detailed photos in them), esp. for $45-which is what I paid for it where I got it); then, the photos are blurry, grainy, and lack practically any detail (in most of them-there a very few that have some detail)-you will have much better luck just watching the movie and pausing it to get more detail-it is almost like the book should have been called, "Scrapbook of the Making of M.A."; and then most of the close ups are of foods-which, don't get me wrong, are pretty, but are not even the prettiest of the foods in the movie, and even they are grainy and a little out of focus.
I am so disappointed. I can't believe that this is so incredibly expensive, so small, so blurry, and so, well, awful. And from someone (S.C. and Rizzoli) whose quality work I admire so much! There was so much beauty in the movie that could have been showcased in the book. I feel really cheated. I am actually going to take the book back, which is something I truly never, ever do. It is almost like they gave away all the gorgeous things they made for the movie, or couldn't get permission from the costumers to use the stuff they made, or something else got in the way of actually showing anything-I am not sure what happened, but it left me frustrated and sad (it is nothing like the product description says). So, buy the amazing movie, which is a feast for the senses to be sure-filled especially with absolutely gorgeous handwork/sewing/dying/ribbonwork/wigwork/etc. to die for; as well as great music, a good story (which I think is probably more like what it would have been like (since they really were a bunch of teenagers with a ton of money-have you been to Versailles?), and save your pennies for some other coffee-table book or a period costuming book from MOMA.

Disappointed- Not what I expected,
By
This review is from: Marie Antoinette (Hardcover)
I have been giddy with excitement for this film to open. I've always been interested in Marie Antoinette and I actually played her charactar in a play when I was younger, so when I saw this book I became overjoyed and bought it. I guess what I was expecting was a story-form version of the movie (which I've not seen yet- it releases tomorrow) but instead I received what seems to be an over-priced copy of a screen-play with decidedly few lines (I read through it ALL in 20 minutes if that...) that shows no emotion nor pulls you in. It shows some shots from the movie, that are medium quality at best and some - I dare say - low-quality and blurry photos. I am disappointed that I paid so much for something that I guess I thought would be very different.
Bottom line: If you are looking for a keepsake because you love this movie or Sofia Coppola in general, than go for it and spend your money. But if you are looking to read the book version of the movie, then DO NOT buy this. This is a screenplay only and nothing more, unfortunately.

this book in short, did not meet my expectations. I thought it would have much better pictures of the beautiful costumes. you think of this beautiful movie and how much of M.A's life was centered around clothing. I was expecting close-ups of the amazing craftsmanship on the costumes, and sketches (which there are none). instead, I was deliverd Kirstin Dunst's high school year book, with tiny, grainy pictures of her big powdered hair.

An explosion of pastels and personal beauty...,

I've just received this book in the mail today, I am not only a fan of Ms. Coppola's films but her photo books as well. This completes my collection so far as I have her previous three (The Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation and SC 2003) books plus this one. I have been hesitant to peek inside as I'm waiting for the film to be released but it's presented beautifully. The photographs are complemented by a narration from pages of the film script which adds a personal touch from the director to the reader.
This book is a great buy to any fan of Ms. Coppola's as well as any film or photography book collector. You will see in these pages that truly no detail was spared.

A picture paints a thousand words,

I bought this book on a whim and I am happy that I did. The photos are absolutely superb. Just gorgeous. Its a nice little companion for the film. I only wished that some photos were larger and that there was a larger selection. Most of the photos in it are just the promotional photos I have seen everywhere online. But still a wonderful book to display on a table.

Disappointment,
By

I was so disappointed with this book.I love, love, love the movie and was so excited to get this book and see all of the pictures. Unfortunately the pictures are all small and very grainy and have no fine detail at all. When you watch the movie you see all of these fantastic vibrant colors and there is nothing like that here. Plus the script is not complete and jumps around. I would suggest saving your money and doing what another reviewer said, which is go online and print the pictures yourself. You will get a much better selection and picture quality that way. [...].
