3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but fun to peruse March 13, 2012
I bought this book because Nina Garcia and Joanna Cole are two women who strike me as having a more practical appeal to the sophisticated woman approach to style than most fashion editors. I thought Ms. Corrigan would provide similar insights. In some ways, my expectations were met. In others, I was let down.

The Good: There are plenty of ideas for those who need a kick out of their rutt. I especially like their accessory suggestions, which were bold and probably could have successfully filled a book all by themselves. The chapter format is well organized and easy to follow and they provide gads of eye candy with many photos per page.

The Not So Good: I found many suggestions to be by impractical, and even inappropriate in some cases. It became obvious that their target demographic is the under 35 bracket living in NYC or similar environment. Yet, even at that age, I wouldn't recommend showing more than 2 inches of skin above the knee for interviews or in a professional environment (unless you work in the fashion or entertainment industry). Same with deep v necklines.

While the visuals will keep your attention, the quality and/or quantity of advice seems sparse at best. Perhaps the book title threw me. I expected something along the lines of setting up an ER scenario and serving up a quick fix. Example:

Emergency: I have a formal engagement tonight and found a stain on the only formal dress I own. It's too late to go to the dry cleaner, what can I do?

Quick Fix: If the stain is on the torso, try adding a fake fur stole or silk shawl with a statement brooch to hold it in place. A tuxedo jacket might all do the trick until you can get to the cleaners. If your stain can't be easily hidden with other garments or accessories, try these tricks for minimizing or removing the stain.....

You get the idea. I did take away some innovative styling ideas, and I look forward to another book from Ms. Corrigan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clothing Wisdom = Clutterless Closet March 14, 2013
I believe that some women have a better chance of filling their closets wisely, thus avoiding clutter, by gaining knowledge about how to dress and shop. And so, any woman in a panic over what to keep in her closet might want to look at Marie Claire Outfit 911 by Marie Claire magazine contributing editor Joyce Corrigan. Many of the choices highlighted in this book are deliberately over-the-top, outrageously extreme to illustrate fashion "nevers" in diverse situations from job interview to clubhopping. These so-called "Deal Breakers" are funny. And the "Deal Makers" are instructive. Outfit 101 supplies multiple visuals of smart options, providing readers with an excellent guide for their own selections. It does not examine topics such as how to choose a cut for your body type or decide which colors are right for your skin tone. But after reading this work, women will have a chance of looking and feeling even more fabulous than they already do. They won't be out for consumer therapy; they'll be carefully weighing options.
