From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up?While there are a number of effective biographies of Marie Curie available, this one has the advantage of focusing attention on the scientific aspects of her discoveries and presenting her life for an older audience. In some cases, where more background information is needed, several pages are devoted to such topics as the creation of the Periodic Table and the principles of radioactivity. Pasachoff also discusses the scandal involving Curie's affair with a married colleague a few years after her husband's death, which tends to be glossed over in other treatments. Curie's failure to recognize the health dangers of radium until the very end of her life is also discussed, as is the unfair treatment she received from the French press. The book includes a fairly long list for further reading and a good index. Black-and-white photos and reproductions appear throughout. This is a thorough biography, particularly useful for reports.?Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL

From Kirkus Reviews
In the Portraits in Science series, an intelligent chronicle of Curie's life, from her struggle to educate herself in Russian-occupied Poland to her successes in France; her pioneering work with her husband; and her troubles and triumphs after his death. While Pasachoff provides detailed explanations of Curie's scientific achievements, she paints an equally detailed portrait of Curie as a chemist-celebrity. Pasachoff's resolute concentration on the subject at hand--be it the gossip surrounding the Curies' Nobel Prize or the protocol for isolating radium--allows her to fold an impressive amount of information into a compact text. She provides background in history, physics, and chemistry; descriptions of the position of women in science at the turn of the century; and an illuminating analysis of Curie herself, whom Pasachoff treats with detached sympathy. A perceptive and informative biography. (b&w illustrations, diagrams, chronology, bibliography, index) (Biography. 13+) --
