5.0 out of 5 stars True Friendship, July 27, 2011
This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
This is a great story written by the author in 3 different languages, English, Spanish and French. Marie was seeking seashells at the seaside when she came across a huge sea turtle who was finding it difficult to crawl back into the ocean. She came to its aid and tried to help but the turtle was too huge and she needed help. Her parents was standing at the seaside and the taught of asking them was out of the question for they will take the turtle home and cut it up to make stew.

What is Marie to do? Will her parents cut up the turtle for stew or will they help the poor turtle? You just have to buy your own copy and find out...lol!

This is a great story about friendship between a young girl and a sea turtle and her desire to help it back into the ocean. The story is also told in two other languages, a great way to promote other languages. This is a must have for parents and classroom teaching. One of the best watercolor illustrations I have come across by Ruben Chavez.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story that teaches children to follow their heart!, March 19, 2011
This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
In this book Marie follows her heart and cares for a sea turtle that cannot return to the ocean on its own. I feel this story is so important because not only does it teach children to follow their hearts and take care of our world's animals, but it also introduces children to sea turtles in general. Growing up in FL, I learned a lot about sea turtles as a child and what a hard life they can have and how important it is for humans to intervene when a turtle is in trouble. Unfortunately, our turtles need to be protected from humans as well and Marie teaches children to be brave and stand up for what is right even if it is scary. Now that I live in TN, I see a definite need to teach children about sea turtles and how to protect them. This is a creature that children in landlocked states don't really learn about. This book is especially important for readers in states such as mine. Not only is it a good book to purchase for your child but every school should have one in their library as well. This beautifully written story includes illustrations that are colorful and a joy to look at!

4.0 out of 5 stars Compassion in 3 languages, March 3, 2011
This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
We immediately fall in love with Marie's compassionate nature. Her desire to help as well as to protect her new friend, the sea turtle, is endearing. Her willingness to hold her ground with her parents and plead the turtle's case in a respectful, but insistent manner is a good example to children that adults are not always right and it is important to state yourself.

I loved that the story is told in three languages, English, Spanish and French. Many families are bi-lingual and this story allows the native language speaking parent/grandparent to sit and read with their English-speaking child. And it exposes the child to a third language.

The illustrations are lovely, with bright colors and lots of action.

This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
"Marie and Her Friend the Sea Turtle" is a very cute -trilingual- juvenile story written by Nicole Weaver. It is about a little girl named Mary who one day, on her usual quest to find seashells along the shore of an ocean near her house, ends up finding instead a sea turtle in great distress. She feels very sorry for the sea turtle and tries very hard to rescue her by trying to push her back in the ocean. But she quickly realizes that she cannot; and has to rely on her parents, whom she fears for loving sea turtle stew,to help her free her. At the end of the story, her compassion and love for the sea turtle convince her parents, who were thinking of eating the sea turtle, to save her instead. I would truly recommend it to French and Spanish dual-language programs and to parents desiring to teach their children English, Spanish, and French. This story can also be used to teach children about love, determination, and compassion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introducing children to new cultures, September 12, 2010
This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
Marie is a little girl whose house is built near the bluest of oceans. Every morning, Marie likes to visit the shore to collect seashells. When she sees a large shiny object in the distance, she thinks she's found the biggest seashell she's ever seen. But it's not a seashell, it's a sea turtle. When she learns the turtle is stuck and cannot make its way back to sea, Marie must find a way to help her new friend get back to its home.

The book takes an unexpected twist as Marie realizes if her parents find the turtle, they'll cut it up in pieces and make stew. When Marie's parents arrive on the beach, how will she convince them to carry the sea turtle back to the ocean instead of enjoying a fine stew? I found this part of the story shocking, since I don't consider turtle standard fare, but it's also what stands out to me most about this book--Perhaps a different take than others you might read. To me, the story is not only an introduction to caring for nature, but also an introduction to different cultures.

Written in English, Spanish and French, the book can be used to create discussions about what different cultures eat, and all the unusual delicacies available around the world. It shows that food is a big part of our culture and our world. So remember the next time you throw your nose up at the thought of turtle stew, others might be saying, "Scrumptious!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great trilingual book of friendship and compassion, February 25, 2010
This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
Discover a wonderful story of friendship and compassion in "Marie and Her Friend the Sea Turtle" by Nicole Weaver.

One day Marie is walking along the shore collecting seashells, when she spies what she thinks is the largest seashell she has ever seen. Rushing over, she discovers that it is not a seashell at all, but a sea turtle.

The turtle explains that she came ashore to lay her eggs, but her sore flippers prevented her from making it back into the ocean. She asks for Marie's help. Marie soon finds out that she can't lift or push the heavy sea turtle back into the water. And that's when the trouble really begins.

This is a delightful book about the friendship that develops between a young girl and a sea turtle. One of the many great aspects of the book is that the sea turtle can talk and Marie can understand her. The quick friendship that develops and Marie's desire to help her new friend is something that everyone will enjoy.

Marie's parents play an important role in this book, but I don't want to share too much or I'll give it away. All I will say is that Marie teaches them a lesson about compassion they won't soon forget.

The illustrations provided by Ruben Chavez are absolutely wonderful.

A veteran teacher of French and Spanish, Weaver has written this book in English, French, and Spanish. This will allow it to be used with a diverse group of children. Locally, we have a children's hospital who will just love having a trilingual book in their library.

If you're looking for a sweet story, pick up a copy of "Marie and Her Friend the Sea Turtle" by Nicole Weaver. You'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars trilingual children's book, January 25, 2010
This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
In this unique and colorful picture book the story of a young girl who finds a sea turtle is told in 3 languages: English, Spanish, and French. Living next to the ocean, Marie walks along the seashore to collect shells. Thinking she found a giant shell she is surprised to discover it is actually a sea turtle. The gentle creature needs her help to get back to the ocean, but he is too big for her to move. What is she to do? Her parents eye the turtle imagining he would make a good stew. Can she convince them to forget about stew and help her help the turtle instead?

This book has a cute story, with bright and cheery illustrations. I could almost smell the salty ocean and feel the sun on my face as I read it. And I found the tri-lingual ingredient fascinating - it is not often I stumble upon a children's book written in three languages.

Thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of the book for this review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marie and Her Friend the Sea Turtle Review, January 24, 2010
This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
Nicole Weaver's new children's book Marie and Her Friend the Sea Turtle promises not to disappoint the little ones in your life. The exciting adventure begins with a sparkling ocean and a little girl Marie hunting for seashells. She spots something shining in the distance.(This is the part in the book where boys and girls plagued with wiggle wormitis will sit at rapt attention when they discover what the mysterious item is. Could it be the most beautiful seashell ever?) Marie runs over to the shiny item and discovers it is a stranded sea turtle. (I can just hear children oooohing and ahhhhing at this point.) The sea turtle needs to be put back into the ocean, but Marie isn't quite strong enough to help him back into his familiar waters. Maria's parents think the sea turtle would make a nice stew, but Maria convinces them to help save the sea turtle.

There are some important lessons I think children and their parents will learn after reading this book.

1. The importance of families listening with their hearts and not just their heads.

2. Children will hone their critical thinking skills. While her parents and Marie had differing opinions of what should be done with the sea turtle, they worked together and came up with a satisfying solution. Children will learn how cooperation makes a person become part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

3. Children will also learn the art of compassion for God's creatures. Marie exemplifies this lost art and will give parents opportunities to discuss treating animals with respect.

4. Children will be exposed to different cultures and discover even if we live in different parts of the world, compassion never goes out of style.

If you have a hesitant little reader in your home, Marie and Her Friend the Sea Turtle would whet their reading appetite and give them a love for learning more about sea turtles.

What makes Nicole Weaver's story even more captivating are Ruben Chavez's amazing illustrations. Marie's merciful heart shines through each page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marie and Her Friend the Sea Turtle, June 20, 2009
This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
The wonder and beauty of the ocean draws Marie to the beach each day in the hunt for the perfect seashell. Her adventures bring her to the best location on the island. Delighted to catch a glimmer in the distance, Marie rushes to retrieve what she believes will be the most beautiful seashell ever. To her surprise she finds a stranded sea turtle, who oddly enough communicates his frustration of being stuck on the beach. With love and determination Marie seeks a way to release the sea turtle back to his home in the ocean.

Written in English, French, and Spanish children's author, Nicole Weaver reaches many cultures and pulls at children's hearts in their love and wonderment of the world around them. Illustrator, Ruben Chavez further brings the story alive with his colorful illustrations which certainly will make the reader yearn for their own beach adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a unique book!, June 2, 2009
This review is from: Marie and her Friend the Sea Turtle/Marķa y su amiga la Tortuga del mar/Marie et son amie la Tortue de mer: One book written in English/Spanish/French (Paperback)
This is a well written, unique, children's book. My daughter was most interested in the illustrations, which are beautiful. I really enjoy how the different languages are written on each page to allow for bilingual and trilingual children to read all of the translations as they are reading the book. It is a fun book to read, both my seven year old and my two year old were engaged by it.
