EXCELLENT CHRISTMAS SPECIAL,
By
This review is from: Marie Osmond's Merry Christmas [VHS] (VHS Tape)
IF THIS IS THE SAME VIDEO AS THE SPECIAL THAT AIRED A FEW YEARS AGO..IT IS ONE OF THE BEST CHRISTMAS SPECIALS TO COME ALONG IN A WHILE..IT FEATURES MARIE OSMOND WITH GUESTS KIRK CAMERON LEE GREENWOOD AND SALLY STRUTHERS. THE REASON I LOVED THIS SPECIAL WAS IT GAVE ME THE FEELING OF CHRISTMAS SPECIALS FROM LONG AGO WHEN CHRISTMAS WAS TRADITIONAL...I.E PERRY COMO, BOB HOPE, AND OF COURSE DONNY AND MARIE...IF YOU WANT TO SEE A REALLY BIG SHOW HOSTED BY THE GORGEOUS MARIE OSMOND, BUY THIS VIDEO..ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY....

Big hair, shoulder pads, sequins aplenty, snow and Christmas songs. C'mon folks, take a step back to the big 80's with this fabulous nostalgic Christmas special. Marie is in fine form (even if she IS hiding a baby bump) throughout this timeless program. And for only $4.95! That's cheaper than a good cocktail or a pack of smokes...and you can watch it over and over. I remember back in 1989 when this special first aired my family didn't own a VCR so I had the neighbor family videotape it for me. I watched that video about a hundred times before it finally gave up the ghost as VHS tapes are known to do. Was tickled pink when it came out on DVD. Now I am a teacher with no children of my own so every year at Christmas I force my students to watch Marie's Christmas Special. Grudgingly at first, my students now have an appreciation for the artistry of Donny & Marie. They won't admit that they enjoy it but every eye is glued to the television as soon as I push "play". A true, pure holiday special that never gets old. I can't recommend this DVD highly enough.

This DVD was ok, not as good as the Donny and Marie Christmas which featured the whole family. This only has Marie's son and her nephews. But still worth the low price and is better to some of the junk that comes out now a days.

Apparently Utah really is the cheese state,
This review is from: Marie Osmond's Merry Christmas (DVD)
I cannot believe the high ratings that this absolutely atrocious 1989 special has received. Two stars really is too high, but Marie has pretty eyes and that's the only thing that saves this from one-star territory. But don't be fooled...it's unwatchable. There is more saccharin here than in a Tab cola factory, and the production is whiter than the Utah snow (as noted several times, it was shot in the Osmonds' home state). In fact it's so white that the inclusion of a saxophone solo near the end of the show befuddled me. Of course the backing band had a steel guitar in it, so there you go. And the solo was by country moper Lee Greenwood, who was the last bastion of bearded vocal artists in the '80s music industry. Greenwood has several appearances in this show, and while he clearly is a musical talent his performing skills go a step beyond awful to godawful. Everybody in the production lip synchs, but in Greenwood's case he's too out-of-synch for it to be called such. His efforts at dancing and swaying to the music are robotic and pitiful. Speaking of God, something tells me that the Almighty doesn't list this special on his resume despite all of the references made to him, most of which are sideways. Except of course from Kirk Cameron. My guess is that this show never would have made it to network airplay at all without Cameron (and actually, I'm trying to figure out who in the world aired this and how thin the programming lineup was that week), who believe it or not was a pretty big star back then and not just thought of as the religious zealot that he is now. However, the seeds had been planted, and we see it here as Kirk reads some Christian-themed Christmas story that even by the slumber-evoking standards of the rest of this show is too dull to remember. My supposition is that Cameron would not be involved in this train wreck unless he got to be openly God-centric--quid pro quo. There are cringe-inducing moments everywhere in this sad little show: from the Osmonds' shameless promotion of their talentless brood (skip the ipecac and just play the emetic performance of Marie's son, about 5 years old, from this special), to the gratuitous children's hospital-ward music video, to Cameron's brain-dead mugging for the camera, to Marie's pained expressions during "O Holy Night," to Greenwood's coffee cup, to Candace Cameron's entire segment (she and Kirk clearly were a 2-for-1 deal), to a songful Sally Struthers, to the nerdy audience members, to Marie's shoulder pads befitting of Ray Lewis. I remember the late '80s-early '90s as a pop culture Hell hole, but this is even worse than I remember. Anybody who is nostalgic for any of this must be an Osmond relative--even though, even by this time, Marie was 15 years past her prime. I'm not really sure that she ever had a prime, really. She never was a good singer. Without the inclusion of Sally Struthers as a MUSICAL guest, she'd be the worst singer on her own Christmas special.

The movie arrived quickly and in excellant shape. I'd never hesitate to order from this company again. The show itself is not as good as I'd hoped but it is fun to watch.
