This review is from: Marilyn Horne (Audio CD)
Marilyn Horne is most famous for her Rossini roles, but she applied her formidable coloratura technique to Handel as well. The selections from a live Rinaldo performance are thrilling. Aside from the occasional blip, the sound of these selections is amazing, for a live, nonremastered performance. She really does go for broke. Her rendition of Venti Turbidi must rank among the very best. She navigates the difficult intervallic coloratura almost seamlessly, and at a rapid-fire pace. A less accomplished artist would have slowed it down. Her well-known "masculine" vocal quality is perfect for this role.

Of course, this role is also championed by countertenors, like David Daniels. However, they simply cannot match Horne in terms of vocal prowess. Not to say that they aren't great in their own right, but it's just not the same.

This same CD is also available as CD1 of a 2-CD set, by Opera d'Oro.
