Book Description

April 16, 2012
On the 50th anniversary of Marilyn's death, this beautiful book is an elegant pictorial celebration of the beloved star by the Magnum photographers who immortalized her. It's been half a century since we lost Marilyn Monroe, but her presence in popular culture has never faded-due in part to the incredible abundance of photographs that were taken of her. Many of those pictures were taken by members of the Magnum photographic cooperative, and appear in this stunning collection that expresses every aspect of Marilyn's multifaceted persona. Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Eve Arnold, Inge Morath, Philippe Halsman, Bruce Davidson, Dennis Stock, Bob Henriques, Erich Hartmann, and others capture Marilyn on and off the set. The images range from glamorous portraits to candid scenes of delicate intimacy. Marilyn is pictured filming movies such as Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes; also included in the book are Elliott Erwitt's renowned shots of Marilyn wrangling horses on the set of The Misfits, her last film. In richly toned black and white as well as lustrous color, these photographs reveal Marilyn's uncanny ease in front of the camera. Whether acting or exercising, putting on make-up or gracefully posing, Marilyn was a photographer's dream. This celebration of her life will be a treasured keepsake for her millions of fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars Marilyn never disappoints, but this book did June 12, 2012

I am a huge Marilyn fan and bought 'Marilyn by Magnum' because it was supposed to be one of the best pictorial books about her. There are supposed to be 160 pages, but my book had only 144. Of these, there are about 17 blank pages in the book. Were there supposed to be pictures on these pages, did I receive an incomplete copy, or was this an "artistic" decision? If left blank intentionally it was a waste of paper, and I wish they would have put larger copies of the contact sheets on them. The color photo of Marilyn jumping in the red dress opposite the title page and on page 73 disturbed me, until I realized it was a reversed image. On page 72, there are two other red dress jumping photos which illustrate this fact. Is this the fault of the Magnum group or the printer? There are also contact sheets that are marked as `reversed' in the book, so I'm thinking it's the fault of the former. I had seen most of these photos, but there are some new ones here - mostly candid, which I like. The contact sheets, showing the different shots taken from which memorable photos emerged, were what I found the most interesting. I only wish I didn't need a magnifying glass to view most of them. All in all, I can't really recommend this book as a `must have' Marilyn collectible.

3.0 out of 5 stars NICE enough but AVERAGE! June 24, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book contains a lot of nice full-page photographs. Most Die-Hard Marilyn lovers will recognize MOST of the photos which is slightly disappointing (How many never-before-published M.M. photos can we continue to find?) but the presentation within these pages is good/solid. Newer Marilyn fans will have a field day!

5.0 out of 5 stars My thoughts on Marilyn By Magnum August 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I actually bought Marilyn by Magnum as a gift for my daughter when she was having surgery a few days ago. Flowers die while you're in the hospital, so I always try to get something else. We are both AVID Monroe fans. This was okay, but I own some that I thought had better pictures than this did. I've purchased many things from Amazon, and always feel they're very trustworthy to deal with.
