Editorial Reviews

2011 album from the veteran British Metal band. Saracen's Symphonic-Rock instrumentation has been augmented for Marilyn with the inclusion of saxophone impresario Snake Davis. His evocative, soaring solos add greatly to the album's emotional journey. The layered vocal harmonies on `Marilyn' come courtesy of Saracen bass man Richard Bendelow and classical-turned-rock newcomer Karensa Kerr. The fusion of Symphonic Rock with choral-style vocal arrangements has produced an intoxicating mix. Two more vocalists make outstanding guest appearances on this album: Norwegian Rock sensation Issa and `FM' frontman Steve Overland. Issa handles the lead vocals on `Hold On', whilst Steve and Robin intertwine beautifully on `Who Am I?'. Escape Music.

wow its late 2011 and saracen put out yet another album after falling off the face of the earth in late 1984 not to be heard from again until 2003, anyway the best thing saracen ever did was there first album back in 1981 (30 years already) heros, saints and fools, that will always be there masterpiece, take a heart in 1984 did very poorely becouse of the aor direction and that may have been why we did not hear from saracen again until 2003, from take a heart the track we have arrived was awsome though, outside of that it was to light considering they where riding the tailcoats of the nwobhm, they did a great re make of we have arrived in 2003 on there comback album red sky, now onto 2011, ater another great album in 2006 saracen are now back with a concept album, this is not all that bad, this does not sound like the last 3 saracen albums, there is a lot of experementing going on here but i would call this a prog album if my arm was twisted, the vocals and guest appearences are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it is very hard to compare this album with anything else all i can say is if you are a saracen fan since 1981 and you liked the follow ups to heros, saints and fools i think its safe to say you will really get into this opus, it sounds real great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i re visited the take a heart album from 1984 recently and in 2011 it does not sound as bad as it did in 1984 becouse back then WE STILL HAD REAL MUSIC BEING MADE, also i must say red sky was awsome to, its to bad saracen are not a live touring band, i think you can lump them in with marillion or status quo becouse like those 2 bands saracen are an entity of there own, enjoy there latest opus!!!!!!!!!!

Format: MP3 Music
The fact that NWOBHM veterans-turned-pomp rockers Saracen are still active after all these years is surprising enough, but I don't think anyone expected the band to turn their fifth release into a full-blown concept album about the life of screen legend Marilyn Monroe! That's what Saracen has done though, and they did it with help from an interesting cast of characters, including singers Issa Overseen (Issa), Robin Beck and Steve Overland (FM) as well as saxophonist Snake Davis.

Concept albums are always risky, but a band like Saracen that has a history of big, epic melodic rock, is well-suited to the task. Over the course of these eleven songs Saracen takes us through the eyes of Marilyn Monroe and her world, aided considerably by Robin Beck's powerful and emotional vocals on roughly half of the album. The whole album, with its layered choral vocal harmonies, grand instrumental passages, lush saxophone sounds and melodic rock backbone, really conveys the emotion and story quite well. It falls apart a little when it comes to breaking down the individual songs and separating them from the larger album, but taken as a whole Marilyn is quite a moving album.

It's a bit of a departure from the more epic Red Sky, but Marilyn is still an impressive album altogether and a great example of Saracen's talent and ambition. Pomp rock is a somewhat narrow niche, but I could see this appealing beyond the typical Magnum/Ten fanbase and extending into the larger melodic rock fan base. Robin Beck fans in particular won't want to miss this one.
