I bought one of these alternators because it was advertised as being new, and because of the $54 price here on Amazon. I installed it on my jet boat motor, a Big Block 454, and literally used the alternator for about six hours before it stopped charging. I removed the alternator from the boat and immediately heard a clunking noise coming from inside. I disassembled the alternator and noticed the capacitor had fallen out of it's bracket and was hanging loose. The loose capacitor had ground through the two large copper wires on the bottom of the rotor rendering the alternator useless. Although the screw attaching the capacitor bracket to the inside of the case was still tight, I was able to easily slide the capacitor in and out, and back and forth, inside the bracket. At the time I was 325 miles from home, vacationing in Stockton, CA, which happens to have a very large boating community, and thought I could easily find a replacement. Uh, no, not quite so easy. None of the local auto parts stores carry marine rated alternators, the local alternator / auto electric shop wasn't able to help out, and one of the local marine retailers wanted $250 for a rebuilt. So I bought a remanufactured Delco 10si 60 amp model from O'Reilly auto parts, and swapped all the "marine" components from the broken alternator to the rebuilt alternator. That got me through the rest of the vacation without any further problems. When I got home I bought two more alternators from Amazon for spares, and contacted DB Electrical. No questions asked, DB Electrical replaced the broken alternator with another. In fact they warrant these alternators for a year. Before the next alternator goes in the boat you can bet I'll take it apart and make sure the capacitor is tightly in place inside the bracket.

One other thing, because the alternator is rated at 105 amps, you should be using at least an 8 gauge wire from the alternator to the battery. The stock 14 gauge wire can't handle the amperage.

This alternator charges a marine battery quickly with its high output. This alternator is what you want for marine use because it is completely shielded to prevent sparks in your engine compartment. Mechanically it fit perfect on my 350 cubic inch Mercruiser (5.8 litre I think). The electrical connection requires only the heavy wire that attaches using a small nut. The two field wires are no longer used. I simply cut the eyes from these two wires taped them up with electrical tape and fastened them to the heavier wire with a wire tie. The charging circuit uses the mechanical connection for ground and the single wire for positive connection to the battery. When the battery reaches its proper charge the alternator shuts off the charge automatically. I do not use the tach wire for my tachometer as it connects to another location on my boat.
