3.0 out of 5 stars Good Socket, but......, February 7, 2010

Bought several of these as extreme use 12vdc sockets in my toyota FJ cruiser. These are good heavy duty sockets, but the weather or dust covers, slightly shrink in the heat and loose their ability to seal in time. You eventually find your sockets unprotected and the cover flopped open and loose fitting. This is an easy fix with some electrical tape or a careful bead of silicon. The Socket is tougher than the cover, so keep that in mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my use., April 6, 2009

I'm a ham radio operator. In constructing a portable station that is 12 volt battery powered, I added two of these to the power panel on the front of the rack that holds my equipment. One is used at night with an LED map light on a gooseneck and the other is available for charging phones or running other 12 volt equipment that is powered through a cigarette lighter plug.

These are rugged and easy to mount in a 1 1/8" hole. Connection is via standard quick-connects. No soldering required. I fused each of these behind the panel with 10 Amp in-line automotive fuses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great but one small glitch, August 7, 2010

Have installed a bunch of these (about half dozen on my pontoon boat, riding mower, etc.). Quick way to hook up a 5 amp charger (e.g. Minn Kota MK-105P) where you have several boat batteries. The fuses can be downsized for whatever device you're plugging in because each of the associated plugs has it's own fuse. They lock nicely and stay in when you're going across rough water. The glitch is that after a few weeks of being exposed to sunlight, the covers warp & won't stay closed, so there goes the weather-proof feature. However, it's pretty easy to fix. Simply cut some short lengths of 1/2 inch CPVC pipe (about .3 inch in length is ideal) and press into each of the rubber cover caps, then the covers stay shut. No big deal, but this should be done before the customer gets it.
If you are gonna' use these on a boat, solder the wires to the back of the socket and be done with it. However, the socket can't take much heat, so tin the wires, stick 'em through the holes in the connectors, then solder it quickly to avoid melting the socket.
