This review is from: The Marine (Harlequin American Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first Leah Vale book. I'll admit I picked it up because of the uniform, but the plot had some promise. Didn't live up to it. Part of the Lost Millionaire miniseries, The Marine is the story of Rick Branigan, one of the long-lost McCoy heirs. He's got to be in Dependable, Missouri by his grandfather's birthday in order to collect his inheritance. The problem? He's facing a felony charge for drunk driving and hit-and-run. A McCoy corporation lawyer (our heroine) has been sent to get him out of trouble quickly and quietly.

My problem with this story? No concern was expressed over what Rick wanted. He had a good career with the Marines. Yes, that future was in jeopardy over the criminal charges, but since this is a romance novel, we all know he has to be good and true and honorable so he could never have actually committed the crime (as we quickly find out). It was just assumed that he would want to drop everything to go join the McCoy family business to collect an inheritance he never expected.

On a nitpicky note, whether he was being charged by the Marine Corps or by civilian authorities, he would be able to consult a JAG attorney. The Acme Legal Services thing was too much.

There were some good scenes. The pool hall was my favorite, and the kids' birthday party to show how loved Rick was by his colleagues was adorable. There was the occassional military metaphor that was cute and not too overused. But overall, the story just lacked that spark.
