John Murdock is a former marine trying to live as a civilian. He's spent the past year recovering from losing his right leg in a road-side bomb during a tour of duty. Moving into an apartment of his own, he crosses paths with Maggie Wheeler, a KCPD officer dealing with demons of her own as well as trying to make detective.

Maggie is put on a task force to assist in capturing a serial rapist who's been inactive for the past 10 years. With her ex-husband now out on parole for raping her years ago, she's the perfect member of the task force to speak with the first victim of the Rose Red Rapist in 10 years using her own experience.

John thinks Maggie is being civil to him but feels she sees him as he does, someone who is no longer a man. Maggie sees him as a hero, first helping her and her 10 year old son escape an elevator in their apartment building that breaks down between floors and then becoming her friend. He also shows her she isn't the worthless woman her ex-husband makes her feel like.

As more and more coincidental breakdowns within the apartment building occur, trying to link her husband to them proves difficult. Maggie has doubts because of her ex-husband and his abuse of her in the past and questions if she could even be a detective. John has faith in her and bonds with her son.

Their story is refreshing as John isn't the hot and overtly sexy hero of most romance novels. He's a man who's served his country and paid a price for it. Maggie is a 6 foot woman with insecurity issues. As their relationship grows, they each break through the defenses of the other and find love while dealing with her crazy ex and a serial rapist emerges with a thirst to go after more women.

A good read with people you can relate to.

I am pleased to say Julie Miller did a great job with this book too. I have read quite a few of Ms Miller's books and she has not disappoint me yet. Maggie and John in this book took my heart for what each one had to face in life. A strong story line. How many people in real life are facing the very same thing John has to face in this book. Look around you in your town and city. This book can be a real life story for many in the real world. Heartbreaking but true. Ms. Miller put this book for all to read and try to express so much in one book. Thanks Ms. Miller for this book and I have gained a new respect for all service men and women who gives their all for our freedom. sue Leech

OMG, another great hit between John and Sarge. John is retired Marine and he moves in next to Sarge, she is having problems with her ex-husband. Then John being a Marine steps up and protects her. If you are in trouble, it great to have a Marine watch your back. Sparks fly, action happens. This a must read, as a wife of a Marine veteran, I highly recommend this book.

This was my first foray into the Harlequin Intrigue Series, and I really enjoyed this book. It had enough mystery to move the plot along but not overshadow the main love story of it all. I liked both main characters quite a bit, and I felt their romance moved at the right pace. I have enough suspicious as to who the real "perp" might be, and I'm looking forward to reading the others in the series. Overall, I liked the story, and I really enjoy Miller's style. Would highly recommend to other readers.

This book was one of the best by Julie Miller. The story line of John and Maggie was one of the best written of all the books Julie has put out, and I have read them all. You could almost picture a real love story unfolding like this, and I really love the balance between the romance and the " who is the bad guy" plot. Neither side was over done and both were very believable. Over all great read, one that I will be reading over and over!!

The book was very good. It is good to read and try to understand how people deal with problem and attack the encounter in their lives. Either coming out of the war zone or daily life. It was a bit long to find how things were solve.
