4.0 out of 5 stars .......Under The Southern Cross Constellation......., April 21, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Marine Raiders [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The big RKO Studio produced this film on location from Camp Elliot 1942 [now Camp Pendleton]...it's a noteworthy tale of the elite combat troops of the Corps called; Marine Raiders...there were three [3] USMC Raider Battalions during WW2; eventually, they were all decommissioned way/before the war ended for a myriad of reasons...Robert Ryan and Pat O'Brien star to good effect and Ryan's aide, Richard Martin, is entertaining as an elisted man/jeep driver...one disclaimer is Ryan's mad romp through a Japanese infested jungle/terrain is pure Hollywood, but other combat forays are rather well executed...the lovely and engaging Ruth Hussey is well cast as an Australian volunteer homefront Ladies Corps who falls head over heels for Ryan as he recupes from a wound on Guadalcanal...it's a predictable movie for the time it was produced; in addition, the Para-Marines only made one jump into the Solomon islands as the cruel jungle was not a feasible area for good jump zones to rally from [ too many casualties ]...all in all, an uplifting movie about the main offensive thrust that stopped the Japanese from invading our stalwart Ally...now and evermore...Australia, the Kiwis from down under and the Southern Cross constellation above...this belle aurora is the imprinted logo on all 1st Marine Division FMF shoulder patches...the official marching song of the 1st Marine Division FMF is Australia's "Waltzing Matilda"...so "Marine Raiders" is loaded with a plethora of USMC runes unnoticed by the general viewing public...Semper Fidelis.....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

5.0 out of 5 stars Great old Movie!, May 4, 2010
This review is from: Marine Raiders [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This a wonderful old film based on historical background--while still Hollywood, of course. It deserves to be put out on DVD before it is lost to the elements. Do it!!
