Not perfect, but very fun., July 21, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Marine Sharpshooter 2: Jungle Warfare (CD-ROM)
I own just about every first-person shooter ever made, and while "Marine Sharpshooter 2" is certainly not the cream of the crop, it does have quite a lot going for it, if you fit the bill. If you like stealthily sneaking around, avoiding the bad guys and you like sniping first and foremost, this can be quite a fun game.
Look, I really love more in-depth games such as the "Ghost Recon" series and "Operation Flashpoint", but sometimes I don't want to have to think so hard or work so hard to get through an area. Sometimes I do, and those other games are great for intense sessions, but sometimes I want something a bit easier. Simply put, this game is just what I need for those times when I just want to snipe, move, snipe, duck for cover, sneak around, and snipe some more.
My favorite area took place in a pretty large town where you start out with a good amount of sniping ammo, and thus you think you've got it made. I think I had over 200 rounds at the start of the level (and it was a huge level). However, there were no health packs or ammo until the very end of the level, which I reach over an hour later. By then I was down to zero pistol rounds and 12 sniper rounds. I was getting pretty tense about being able to finish that level, but I did.
You can save anywhere either using quick save or the standard save. The controls work excellently, and the scope zooms in smoothly. I had no issues with video or control problems, and ambient sound was a nice touch. There's a good variation of locations, from dark jungles, to rainy areas, to cities, and an abandoned fort. The game is sort of linear, but mostly does a good job of letting you explore a bit. I wish more games like this took the time to create secret areas you could discover, as I love to take my time and explore.
The only problem I found was sometimes it seemed as if certain leaves on bushes would stop my bullet. A minor problem, and a rare occurrence. I'd simply move a bit for a better shot. There's a stealth meter (kinda like Thief's), which I didn't use too much. Enemy AI was not the greatest, but I didn't mind that either. You can stand, crouch, or belly-crawl, and I used all 3 positions quite a bit. Your spotter-guy that accompanies you does a decent job of staying out of your way and announcing when he spots an enemy, at which time you better check your GPS to see exactly where the enemy he sees is. Sometimes you won't be able to see him though, because he'll be up in a tree or on a rooftop. You really have to proceed carefully.
Overall, not a very realistic game, but extremely fun if you like sniping. Other fun budget sniping games I loved: "Vietnam: Black Ops", and "Black Ops 2: Special Assignment". Both those games are steeped in atmosphere and very fun to play also.

A poor excuse for a first-person shooter, January 25, 2005
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Marine Sharpshooter 2: Jungle Warfare (CD-ROM)
Primitive graphics, very clueless enemy and friendly A.I., and repetitive and boring gameplay all combine to make Marine Sharpshooter 2 a complete waste of money. I enjoy most other first-person shooters, but this one belongs in some 99 cent special bin at a software outlet store. Don't bother.
