Book Description

June 1, 2009
Now in its 19th year, The Mariner's Book of Days is an ever-growing encyclopedia of nautical fact, fiction, and folklore, and has been hailed as the best, most entertaining nautical desk diary and calendar to see print. An invaluable reference, each annual edition is completely different from its predecessors, and all have become collector's items.

On every right-hand page is a week of days, with the nautical significance of each explored in brief by the author. On each left-hand page is a collection of nautical miscellany evoking the rich traditions of the sea. Entertaining and informative, illustrated with a variety of lovely etchings, engravings, sketches, and watercolors, The Mariner's Book of Days takes readers on a 365-day voyage through history.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A keeper well after the year is over and done. --Sailing Magazine

[Spectre] is able to assemble an impressively eclectic mix of quotations on whatever nautical topic he has chosen for the left-hand page and also knows exactly where to go in his vast collection to find an arcane yet apposite event or anniversary to celebrate for each of the seven days shown on the right-hand page and can keep on doing that a further 358 times. No wonder The Mariner s Book of Days seems to have reached the status of a minor cult. --WaterCraft

Stumped on a gift for the boater in your life? Consider The Mariner s Book of Days. --Soundings

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Nautical Day Calendar Around, November 7, 2009

The Mariner's Book of Days provides an excellent day calendar and is also loaded with interesting nautical facts, notes and trivia. I have enjoyed the The Mariner's Book of Days for 11 years and still find it a useful and fascinating calendar. I have used many of the hints and processes listed there during my sailing days, as well as learned quite a bit of interesting nautical history and tidbits. Anyone interested in boating or sailing should enjoy this calendar. I have even had people not interested in boating or sailing (my brother in law) enjoy its commentary. Finally, I usually give a copy of it to some of my close boating buddies and they have really appreciated it over the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tidbits and trivia for the nautically impaired., March 7, 2010

So, it's another desk calender. But for those of us who would rather be afloat than in our corporate brigs, this one brings a bit of sea air to the room. My first one was given to me many years ago and was a delight. Since then, a copy for the next year was on my Christmas list and if disappointed, a search party was commenced.
Each page covers a week, with an historic event for each date but still enough room to schedule voyages and working parties, and even some minor trivia like birthdays and wedding anniversaries. The verso page is full of potpourri nautical; quotes from books and famous people, how-to advice, cooking, notable voyages and storms, delightful woodcuts. However, one must have self-discipline to enjoy it for the whole year. The temptation is to read it cover to cover when first received, producing trivia overload and dulling the experience of discovery when the real time comes. In fact, I have reread them looking for a forgotten fact and recently was able to identify a "Final Jeopardy" quote as from John Paul Jones, from a past issue. This is a great gift for your sailing friend, who might even invite you for a sail in return.

I've been using this daily/weekly desk calendar for over ten years. What an amazing collection of maritime facts and history. Peter Spectre must have a wealth of resources to keep coming up with new information year after year.
