Be experienced for this one, March 3, 2000

This review is from: Mariner's Compass Quilts: New Quilts from an Old Favorite (Paperback)
The patterns in this book are gorgeous but the directions fall short unless you are a very experienced quilter--I have made several quilts but am having trouble with the assembly on the basic compass--there is only a sketch to go by and it isn't much help unfortunately

Not very inspiring., May 12, 2008
This review is from: Mariner's Compass Quilts: New Quilts from an Old Favorite (Paperback)
If you are a beginner - none of the books from this series would be helpful, unless you just want to look at pictures of quilts for ideas. There are no detailed instructions on how to make featured quilts, so you will have to be very experienced quilter to understand the patterns and sketches in the book. Mind you that is not the reason I gave it 3 stars - I am not looking to learn how to quilt, and fully understand that the purpose of this publication is to present winning quilts from the "New Quilts from an Old Favorite" yearly contest. Although the quilts in this publication are beautiful, and a lot of work went into making them, they did not inspire me to make A Mariner's Compass quilt. I guess my taste is a bit different in quilts. I LOVE Mariner's Compass pattern, and just think a lot more could have been done with it. There are many books from this series that I found to be absolutely wonderful, and I would recommend them for inspirations: Pineapple Quilts: New Quilts from an Old Favorite (New Quilts from An Old Favorite); Bears Paw: New Quilts from an Old Favorite; Kaleidoscope: New Quilts from an Old Favorite (New Quilts from An Old Favorite)

Great book for inspiration, tips, techniques, & templates, September 7, 2010
This review is from: Mariner's Compass Quilts: New Quilts from an Old Favorite (Paperback)
The quilts in this book have been created by the finalists and winners of a 1997 international contest sponsored by the Museum of the American Quilter's Society; They represent years and years of skill-building! So if your expectation is to make something just like or very similar to the quilts in the book, you will be disappointed. As an inspiration book--with 18 beautiful full-color photos, valuable tips and techniques from experts, along with lots of templates to create your own quilt--the book is exceptional. Please read this excerpt from the preface in order to get an idea of what the publisher intended: "Full-color photographs of the quilts are accompanied by their makers' comments, which provide fascinating insights. Full-size templates for the traditional pattern enable anyone to make a Mariner's Compass quilt, minus the work of having to draft the templates needed. The tips, techniques, and patterns contributed by the winning contestants make a wide range of quilts easier to execute in fabric. It is our hope that this combination of outstanding quilts, full-sized patterns, and instructional information will inspire as many outstanding quilts as the original contest did--adding new contributions to this pattern's continuing tradition.
