5.0 out of 5 stars More than the battles - the essence of the Corps
This book is a meticulously compiled, beautifully crafted history of our nation's finest military force. It goes beyond the battles and looks at the minutiae that made Marines what they are - from weapons and recruiting posters, to sea stories and folklore, to the heroism and valor that have been hallmarks of the Marine Corps since 1775. 2.0 out of 5 stars Printed in CHINA!
Although this is a very attractive and thorough book, it is a disgrace to our Marines who love and fought for this country to have it printed in China.

It's time to show support for OUR COUNTRY and our troops Buy American!

5.0 out of 5 stars More than the battles - the essence of the Corps, June 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Marines (Hardcover)
This book is a meticulously compiled, beautifully crafted history of our nation's finest military force. It goes beyond the battles and looks at the minutiae that made Marines what they are - from weapons and recruiting posters, to sea stories and folklore, to the heroism and valor that have been hallmarks of the Marine Corps since 1775. Of the many books on this almost mythical institution that I have read, the best by far is this unique and all encompassing volume by one of the Marine Corps most prominent and loving chroniclers. Heritage is the thread that makes the Marines what they are - the tangible link between the first Sea Soldiers and the current Marines even now serving the flag in dangerous places like Kosovo. For those who hold the Corps sacred, this book should become the Holy Grail of Marine Corps histories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Get it Reprinted Quickly!, September 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Marines (Hardcover)
A classy book that really does justice to the Marine Corps! I just discovered it recently while browsing and REALLY liked it because the Phantom picture on page 225 was a skillfull "one wheel up" landing by Maj. Carl E.R. Black with me in the back seat as the RIO. See http://teamchicago.com/USMC/30anny.htm for the story (we touched down twice!) and more pictures of this crash landing. Perhaps the caption will get updated in the next reprint!

Our squadron commander (VMFA-314) was Frank Petersen, author of "Into the Tiger's Jaw: America's First Black Marine Aviator - The Autobiography of Lt. Gen. Frank E. Petersen"

5.0 out of 5 stars The centerpiece of my Marine Corps Collection, January 10, 2000
This review is from: The Marines (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book on the Marines. Mainly a historical/traditions book. If you want technical information, get something like Tom Clancy's "Marine". Either way, this book is great. Overall, it is my favorite Marine Corps book. Tons of incredible pictures. Has chapters on history, today and tomorrow's Corps, even a chapter on dress blues. If you are or were a Marine, or just love the Marine Corps, you have to get it. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure for ALL Marines!, July 25, 2002

I purchased this book for my husband, for our anniversary. He had, many times, picked up this book at our local bookstore and thumbed through it. The book drew numerous smiles and comments from him. "Hey hun, look at this.." became the regular statement made, while browsing through the pages. Not only did the book offer a throrough history of the Corps, but it brought back endless memories for him. I've enjoyed this just as much as he has! The book is a beautiful presentation of history, wonderful photos, artwork and facts. We've had the book quite some time, and he's still admiring it, learning new things from it..... still smiling as he "looks" through it! In effect, what I have is a Dashing Grunt, who's so happy you'd think it was November 10th. :-) A great book for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT HISTORICAL DOCUMENTATION EVERY MARINE SHOULD KNOW, March 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Marines (Hardcover)
This book has an excellent record of the Corps history. As a former Marine who served in Viet Nam and have been working with the marines for the past 27 years, this book provides the links between the old Corps and the new. I recieved this book as a gift from my daughter who has listened to my stories for years. Once a Marine always a Marine.

This book is one of the most impressive I've ever seen. Very well put together with a wealth of easy-to-read information concerning the "World's Finest" United States Marine Corps. Designed with the class and style in which only the Marine Corps is capable of inspiring. (Thank you mom for this Christmas treasure!) Semper Fidelis!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Marines (Hardcover)
Despite an aching back, I stood for over an hour this afternoon thumbing through the pages of this book at a local bookstore. It was outstanding. I was a Marine combat correspondent in Vietnam ('67) and saw a number of photos taken by my colleagues, including David Douglas Duncan in Con Thien where I also was. What struck me about "Marines" is the extensive and well balance coverage of the history of the Corps. I found it very amusing the "political correct" comments about several of our controversal commandants. How true. How true. Great work. I came home and immediately ordered this book from Amazon.

Semper Fi!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Marine of Times Past, Today, & Time To Come, February 26, 2001
This review is from: The Marines (Hardcover)
This is an amazing book worth giving any Marine or former Marine or any of those many people who are interested in the story of the United States Marines. On top of the navy blue canvas cover features the ornate United States Marine Seal that buldges up in its nooks and crannies and has the feel of a metal that provides this feeling of pride for the Marines and ownership of the history of such a exceptional military institution. However the good stuff is inside with informative information of the Marines from beginning of their formation to what is expected of them in the 21st century and its tied in with a multitude of pictures in which most I never seen before (despite me being military enthusiast) that explains the text perfectly and will wow you.
