Product Description

Marinex Glass Bakeware production began over 50 years ago by Santa Marina, the largest glass manufacturer in Latin America. Located in Brazil, Santa Marina has been producing different glass products since 1895. The factory location is close to raw material deposits of boron and sand which is rich in color and quality. During the production process, these raw materials are combined using heat to make borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is resistant to changes in temperatures used in cooking and baking. The raw materials also give Marinex glass bakeware a slight bluish tint consistant throughout all pieces. Marinex Glass Bakeware offers several shapes and sizes that have countless uses in culinary activities and are prominent by their beauty, durability, and ease of cleaning. It can be used to prepare, bake, and serve food as well as to freeze prepared food. It is safe for both conventional ovens and microwave ovens. Marinex Bakeware can go from the freezer/refrigerator to a pre-heated oven where the oven temperature does not exceed 100C or 212F to start. However, Marinex Bakeware should not be used on stovetop burners or over a direct flame. This is a 20oz. fluted round pie baking dish that measures 8" x 7" x 1-1/2". All Marinex bakeware is dishwasher safe. Item #GD16227410

I am back to order 3 more of these little jewels. They are the perfect size for pie for the two of us. Just right for us to each have a nice sized slice after dinner for two nights. No more throwing away half a pie because it's gotten watery.

The really neat thing is that it's so deep it holds almost a regular recipe of pie filling. Two advantages to this: 1) there's just enough filling left over for one small pudding cup for my husband with his lunch on baking day and 2) it makes for a much higher filling to crust ratio--you get a nice thick pie out of it. Much thicker filling layer than with a 9 or 9 1/2 inch pie plate.

On top of all this, there's the other thing--they are just so darn cute!

EDIT: Oct 2013 - this little pie plate is still going strong. No problems, no regrets. I use it regularly.

EDIT: June 16, 2012

Well it's been 9 months and this little pie dish has performed just fine. No problems whatsoever treating it as normal pyrex ovenware - preheating the oven is fine, given you're starting with a room temp pie dish (ie you're not taking it out of the fridge or freezer and putting it right into the oven).

I love the smaller size - it allows me to make a smaller pie that's just right for our 2 person household. I haven't used the "regular" size pie plate since I got this one. I may eventually get another - so I can bake one savory and one sweet pie at the same time.

I've upgraded it to 5 stars as it is holding up to regular use just fine.

ORIGINAL REVIEW (slightly edited) FOLLOWS

I did not notice the recommendation not to preheat - I threw the product insert away when I got the pie plate (who needs to read the blurb on a pie plate??? } Because of questions about the stability of the glass I have downgraded the rating by one star to only 4.

***** NOTE: I have since upped this rating to 5 stars *****

I did measure the plate - it is 7 and a half inches on the inside at the top and about 5 1/2" on the inside at the bottom. It does just about hold 20 oz as described.

A regular 9" Pyrex pie plate holds 4 cups (I measured that too). So this little pie plate makes just about half the amount of pie compared to a full-size pie plate. It is the same depth (roughly 1.5") as a standard pie plate but probably looks slightly deeper because it is so much smaller in diameter.

As for the admonition not to preheat - I am ignoring it.

I read the "Users Guide" that came with the pie plates and it stated "Do not use in preheated oven". I emailed the company (in Brazil) hoping someone would understand my English email, to ask how in the world you can bake with a pie plate that can't go into a preheated oven. I got the following response: "Regarding the usage of our products you may follow strictly all instructions indicated in small guide you are referring to. You must put your Marinex into the oven WITHOUT preheated oven due to its chemical composition considered a superior glass, so that you will avoid any possible cleavage or breakage." So I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed when I use these things and hope they don't shatter when I put them in a preheated oven.

I can pie filling in pint jars and was looking for a pie pan that would be just the right size. This is a great pan and is very close to being the right size. The pie overflowed by a bit so next time I'll remove some of the juice from the pie filling and I think it will work great. I also read the review about not puting the pan in a preheated oven. Not sure what is up with that recommendation, I used it in a preheated oven and so far no problems.

Now that our kids are grown and moved out, my husband and I can't eat an entire 9" pie. This 7" pie plate makes exactly half of a regular sized, deep dish pie. The Marinex pie plates are extremely well made, and go easily from counter, to preheated oven, to refrigerator, to dishwasher. And they have those attractive rims for fluting a top crust. Perfect!

These plates are perfect. They are just the right size - not too big. So if you have a small crowd, you can make a few different pies, please everyone and not have TONS of dessert left over!! And Amazon is the only place I could find them!!
