5.0 out of 5 stars Unparalleled November 9, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Marino's ICU Book has remained one of the most accessible and comprehensive intensive care resources available. The 3rd version, however, was woefully out of date -- until now. The 4th edition is fully updated, features colored illustrations and photographs, and offers a searchable online-version of the text for use with your iPad/smartphone/etc.

Despite owning a library of critical care texts, I won't often find myself reaching for my copy of Vincent's Critical Care again. This is an indispensable resource for medical students, residents, fellows, attendings, Pas and critical care RNs, etc. More than just a technical manual, it is often insightful, whimsical, and poignant. There are very few medical references that you can sit down with and actually read recreationally, but this is one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent clinical reference January 6, 2014
I was given this edition of "Marino's The ICU Book" as a gift. I have not had the opportunity to fully absorb all of the new changes. It would seem that the book has been fully re-written, including updated references and tables, reflecting current practice ( such as Theraputic Hypothermia, updated ventilation modes, etc.) I appreciate the fact that the publisher has chosen to make this essential reference available in electronic form. This is a reference that I will use frequently in clinical practice. A most thoughtful and practical gift from a dear friend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book! July 4, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Fantastic book! Easy to read, with all the necessary and important information.
A couple of things outdated but you can't ask in a book a 100% up to date information. The application for tablet and phone is by far the best feature of all! I never get caught without knowing at least something during ICU shifts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent edition December 21, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
For those who have read the 3rd edition, the 4th edition is a huge improvement. The content as usual is excellent with a lot of pictures and CURRENT literature references that is easily accessible. On top of that the electronic version is very intuitive, easy to navigate.

For those interested in ICU this is a MUST buy

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast ICU text to read. December 29, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Residents and students can be easily scared in the ICU. Your patients are sick, and its up to you to figure out how to manage them. They usually are unstable (that's why they're in the ICU!!!) and tend to have very complex issues. Nowadays, ICU isn't very well taught in medical school and doing an ICU rotation is optional in your 3rd/4th years. Therefore a good text is important in case you need reference to figuring out what is going on. To be honest, I only read maybe 3-4 chapters to this point (you don't have much time when you're taking care of ICU patients) but I really enjoyed the simple way of how everything is written in this book. I've read other critical care texts where it cites a lot of good articles and theories behind things but I think the ICU book puts it in a way that's not overwhelming. That being said, the chapters I've read has left me wanting more. This is a great starter reference book and it does cite all the articles/research that it quotes from so that when you want to do more research on your own, it will be easy for you to find.

I definitely enjoy the tables and graphs in this book. I never had the older versions of the book so I can't comment what upgrades have been made in this latest edition but I can definitely say that the text is not overwhelming for a medical student (especially 4th years who have had some internal medicine). I will give this book 5 stars because everyone can read this without getting too confused or overwhelmed but if you are a critical care specialist, this book only grazes the top of specific issues. You will definitely need to hit up Uptodate or scan through the new NEJM critical care series. The paper quality is also good (I hate the new medical textbooks which they print on that cheap recycled paper).

In summary: Very good book for the fundamentals of ICU but don't expect immense detail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reference March 19, 2014

It has functional knowledge that can be utilized rapidly.
However, when they scanned it into a digital format they should have reviewed before releasing it, but this is no great loss.
