5.0 out of 5 stars Open Wheel Racing Classic, October 2, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mario Andretti Racing (Video Game)
Andretti Racing for the Sega Genesis was an incredibly, and sadly, overlooked title released by EA Sports. This game allowed the player to choose from Indy, Sprint, or Stock Car - the first two being what is known as "Open Wheel" racing and the third, Stock Car racing, is the type of racing that NASCAR series falls under.
Perhaps its finest attribute is that it is one of the only games ever to offer dirt oval Sprint Car racing. What was special about this was it offered realistic gameplay, in 1st person perspective, that incorporated the challenges of racing on a dirt/clay oval, for example, the need to use advanced controlling in the turns and the "cushion" where the track banks up in the turns and the dirt is moist.
There have been many games since the beginning to today's consoles that offer realistic open wheel racing, but it is most often in the form of Formula One or, less often, Indy Car (a kudos here to the Mario Kart series for bringing not necassarily realistic kart racing (a form of open wheel racing), but very fun kart racing, to us in modern video game format). As far as I know we still have yet to see Sprint, Midget, Champ Dirt Cars, etc. in the video game world and outside of trucks and motocross, virtually no dirt racing especially in the form of the classic dirt/clay oval.
Still a fun game even by today's standards.
