5.0 out of 5 stars Great design
I recently bought several wooden spoons and utensils. Of all of them this seems to be the most functional. I love the groove cut into the handle. The flat head design makes it easy to stir up the bottom of the pan or pot. The wood used is very nice also, and it is a pretty spoon, especially for the price. 1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
A 1/3 inch split developed in the wood on the spoon's flat edge after about five uses(I hand wash and dry promptly). The same thing happened to the replacement Amazon sent. Amazon-Great!! Mario Batali- not so great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Spoon, May 27, 2008

Do not buy this spoon. After using this spoon the first time, I hand-washed and dried it immediately, set it on the counter, came back an hour later and it had already cracked straight down the middle. I have bought many wooden cooking utensils in my life and this is by far the worst ever (and I have bought some really cheap ones and even washed them in the dishwasher).

after about 4 uses, the spoon split in 2 places. I have lots of other wooden utensils and have never had this problem before. I'm disappointed and very glad I didn't order anything else from this manufacturer. Don't waste your money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Spoon, May 6, 2007

If you're like me, you may keep your wooden spoons beyond when you really should replace them. I bought three new Batali wooden spoons--actually two and one rsiottos paddle--and was delighted with them. They are hefty, well-turned and have a thicker handle than most wooden spoons, making them nicer to grip. I'm only buying these from now on, and may even use them as a little gifts for friends who cook...they are that nice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love this Spoon, October 15, 2008

This is my favorite spoon. Yes it did split even after curing the spoon with oil. But it's still my favorite because of the way it's made.

Lovely piece of wood and fits the hand well. Food tastes better when prepared with efficient and attractive tools.

I make roughly 350 pounds of fudge during the holiday season. This is my "fudge paddle". I have had it for 3 years and it is just starting to show a bit of wear. I decided to replace it before it completly bit the dust but THEY DON'T HAVE IT ANYMORE! Please bring it back!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Wooden Spoon, December 2, 2010
This review is from: Mario Batali 13-Inch Flat End Spoon, Solid Beechwood (Kitchen)
I've had this wooden spoon for two years now, and it is the first I reach for whenever I deglaze a pan or stir fried rice or tomato sauce in a skillet. The handle, thanks to the thumb groove carved into the top, is the most ergonomic one I've used. It really does make a difference! The flat end is perfect for scraping the bottom of a pan, as you do when making gravy or a pan sauce. Even though this spoon is large, it is surprisingly lightweight and well-balanced, which makes it a top-shelf product in my opinion.

A pretty large number of reviewers said that this spoon split soon after they washed it or used it. I have never had a problem with it cracking or splitting, and I have washed it many times, and even left it in the sink (though not in standing water) for a day or two after using it. Never wash wooden spoons in the dishwasher or leave them in water or your cooking pot for long, and they should last a long time. Mario Batali's "Italian Kitchen" website indicates that its products have a limited lifetime warranty that covers product defects, which provides you a safety net if you are worried about quality.

I highly recommend this product.
