Stating The Obvious,

I have never understood why so many people spend so much money to reinvent the wheel and make others rich.
I have been cooking this way for many years but have never heard of a Piastra. Folks, find a roofer in your town who replaces or installs slate roofing on older homes or check out the floor section in Home Depot for slate tiles. This stuff is made to last 100 years. Buy a few pieces of slate. Scrub it clean and oil before using on your grill. Cook your shrimp, scallops, fish and other goodies to your heart's content and in the event that one breaks, (usually by dropping it) spend the $2 to buy another tile.

Junk,
By RR (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mario Batali Granite Grill Piastra (Kitchen)
Purchased in December 2008 used it about 15 times in a 2 month period then it split in half. Contacted Wilco, the manufacturer and they sent another one that looks like it has been repaired but used it 6 times in a 2 week period and now there is a crack that runs all the way around the piastra so it is just a matter of time before this one breaks in two also. I have stopped using per the included instructions and am returning it to the manufacturer for a refund. Food tasted great on it for the time I used it but not worth $50 for so few uses.

I purchased a Batali Italian Grill Piastra in January. I used it perhaps 10 times. Despite taking good care of the stone, it cracked completely across the stone. Given the experiences of the other reviewers, you would do well to pass on this piece of junk.

When i first viewed the product i thought it was a little pricey. Went ahead and ordered anyway and am i glad i did!! Product is high quality and the quality and taste of food prepared on it is actually much better than even Mario states in his cookbook. i highly recommend this for cooks who like seared, quick cooked seafood and find vegetables are outstanding when cooked on it as well. Clean up is easy and just as described it ends up looking like a well seasoned piece of cooking equipment and that adds to the flavor.

Mine cracked in half, too,

Like the other reviewers, ours has cracked in half. Very disappointing--we liked using it--but can't justify spending another $50 for something that lasts such a short time. I suggest you pass on this to save yourself the same disappointment.

Mine cracked as well,

Loved the way it cooked everything. First a hairline crack and then a chunk fell out, now in two pieces. Have used it about 12 times, so will miss. Was going to buy another thinking that the cracking was a one off, but after reading the reviews, will also pass.

I SO wanted this to be what it said, and to the extent that one can keep it in one piece, it does work: shrimp on the stone is a beautiful thing. However, $100 and two stones later, I find that this is just not worth the price: despite the most meticulous care and adherence to the intructions, the stone breaks.
I am a big cook and a great fan of specialty cookware, and I have no problem with putting in the effort to keep it working properly and looking beautiful (all my copper glows, always; my 20-yr old Calphalon still looks new, as do my Le Crueset pieces). I did EXACTLY what the directions said: always put it in a COLD grill to heat up slowly; rarely moved it from the grill and then ONLY when it had cooled or had not been heated. And yet, two stones have gone exactly the same way: one big crack, right down the middle (the short way), for absolutely no apparent reason. I'm not an engineer; not sure what's going wrong. Perhaps it's too thin? In any event, it would have to be half the price to ever tempt me again.

Piastra Disastra,
This review is from: Mario Batali Granite Grill Piastra (Kitchen)
I carefully followed the instructions, but the piastra developed a hairline crack during its first use. Stay away from this piece of... stone.

A CRACKING DEAL !!,
This review is from: Mario Batali Granite Grill Piastra (Kitchen)
Product delivery was fine. I prepared the Piastra as instructed BUT after only the second time I used it the piastra developed a crack some 6 inches long.
It had to be returned.

I seared Tuna, scallops- amazing results. The only trick to this is you need to have a grill where you can leave it on 500 degrees for 15 minutes + before you put the fish/meat etc.. on it and make sure you oil (olive oil) the food before placing it on the grill. MOST IMPORTANT- always place it on a COLD grill and then heat it. Never take a cold piece of marble and then put it on a hot grill- it will crack. Those that don't understand the laws of physics were disappointed. You will be happy with this product.
