Editorial Review

Given that most people will buy anything with Mario's chubby face plastered on it, the developers of Mario Golf could have taken the easy route with this license. Instead they practically ignored it, focusing on gameplay instead. Players can jump straight into the golfing action on one of the game's four courses, but we recommend checking out the excellent role-playing mode. In this mode, you create a character and improve his or her golf skills by earning experience points in tournaments, playing minigames, or receiving items from characters in the gaming world.

This is one of the best arcade golf games on any system, period. The physics just feel right. If you perform poorly, it was probably your fault--rather than poor game controls. The camera zooms in on the action when the ball gets close to the hole, turning many shots into nail-biting experiences. After a few pathetic rounds, we were able to get a feel for the wind and the lie of the greens. Then, it happened--we became hooked on this must-own game. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Terrific, intuitive controls
  • Ability to improve performance of your golfer in the RPG mode
Cons:
  • Not your typical Mario game

5.0 out of 5 stars Mario Golf for GBC is the bomb diggity!, December 6, 1999
By A Customer
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mario Golf (Game Cartridge)
Mario Golf, unlike many Gameboy games, has that distinct pick-up-and-play capability along with the challenge of the best RPG. The graphics are astounding for GBC, and any Gameboy game with the ability to pack 5 courses into one game must be a winner. So we have winning graphics, along with killer play control. There is the typical power meter bar, and menu selections are simple. Finally, we reach the game design. It plays like a golf RPG, where by beating mini-games and placing in tournaments one increases drive, direction of shot, meet area, and control. It is a fun and challenging scenario that has endless possibilities. And unlike most RPGs, the replay value is great! Finally, the sounzd includes recurring Mairo themes as well as new, interesting music. Overall, this game is a definite winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive graphics, great gameplay, November 23, 1999

If you have a Game Boy Color, be sure to pick up this game. The graphics are the best I've seen on Game Boy. As for the gameplay, it is very easy to get started, although it offers a lot of challenge. A great feature is the ability to create a character, and from there you earn experience by winning matches and tournaments. These points can be used to improve the skills of your player. I would recommend this to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Addictive Portable Game Ever!, October 23, 2000
By
"bezeert" (San Francisco, California USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mario Golf (Game Cartridge)
Mario Golf for the Color Gameboy is a fantastic game. This cartridge, the size of a Saltine cracker, packs more punch and fun than games written to run on machines hundreds of times more powerful than the simple Gameboy Color console.

I purchased this game on a business trip in Atlanta, brought it on the plane with me, and had the quickest six-hour trip of my life back to San Francisco thanks to Mario Golf. This game is amazingly addictive, easy to learn, fun to play, and has an excellent graphical makeover to boot.

The game incorporates a small bit of role-playing into the world of a golf as you spend your time in between golf tournaments wandering around the various country clubs. There you can interact with other golfers, play mini-games, and enhance your skills.

The key to becoming a better golfer in Mario Golf involves gaining experience points which in turn allow you to gain levels, which then award you points you can attribute to your skills. Your ultimate goal is to win all of the tournaments and beat the four "club pros" in a singles match. After accomplishing that, you will be able to visit the land of Mario and play against him on his rather unique course.

All in all, this game is a blast and provides endless fun for almost anyone.
