Ok, I am 26 years old. I rented this game so my girlfriend's 16 year old brother would have something to do over Thanksgiving when I visited. We ALL ended up playing this game! It is an incredible amount of fun, and it's reply value is incredibly high. I wish there was better music, but it would take away from the sound effects, which are definitely very good. This game is a must for all ages, particularly those who like to play games with other people. Note, if you want to play a 4 player match, you should have a pretty big TV.

One of the best racing games on the N64, May 11, 2002
This review is from: Mario Kart 64 (Video Game)
Mario Kart 64, the sequel to the first Mario Kart game on the SNES is great. Nintendo got rid of some of the things that made the SNES title so much fun, but added a lot too. The gameplay is much more enhanced, the characters look much better and the individual go-karts are very realistic. Like the SNES version, this game includes 3 modes of play: GP (Grand Prix), Battle, and Time Trial. In GP you choose one of 8 characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Wario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Bowser in a large variety of courses in the Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup Star Cup, or Special Cup (which you unlike by getting gold trophies in each of the 3 basic courses) in 50cc, 100cc, or 150cc mode. 50cc is the easiest, but in 100cc and 150cc the computer gets much faster and more challenging. There are several items you can collect by driving through the question mark boxes which help you during each race. Lightning bolts (the rarest item to get) makes all of the other opponents small, mushrooms give you a speed burst, banana peels make one of your opponents crash if they slip on it, red shells are used to shoot directly at an opponent to get them off course, and green shells keep bouncing off the walls until it hits one of the racers. Unlike the SNES Mairo Kart game, there are several objects you need to avoid to stay on course. In different races there are trucks and cars that will make you crash if you hit them, snowmen that will blow up if you hit them, and many other obstacles in different courses. In Battle mode you and up to 3 others choose one of the 8 characters. You drive around a course trying to pop each other's 3 balloons. You can pop their balloons by shooting red or green shells at them or throwing banana peels at them to make them slip. You can also use the other items to avoid being hit by them. Once all of your balloons are popped you become a bomb which you can drive around the course trying to run in to the other players. This mode is a lot of fun, especially if you get tired of continually playing Grand Prix mode. In Time Trial mode you race in any of 15+ courses and try to set records for each lap and/or race. The controls for Mario Kart 64 are very simple and easy to master, and the music and sound effects are great as well. If you want a great racing game for your N64, I highly recommend that you check out Mario Kart 64.

I bought this game once I got an N64. It has a very unique way of making the 3D characters perfect to the tiniest details. Everything's so smooth! Also, compared to MarioParty, the supporting characters have cooler voices. If you happen to be one of those people who are a big fan of one of these characters, get this game. Also, if you fit the description above, MarioParty and this game are as good as each other, and they're perfect for parties.

If you like racing games, you cannot ignore MarioKart 64. If you have several people to play against each other, this game will rarely leave your console. If you play solo, even after you have repeatedly beaten it, it is still fun to tool on the computer driven players. Graphics are excellent, and it takes very little time to master.

great game, but missing one thing, April 10, 2000

MarioKart 64 is a good follow-up to the Super NES classic in many ways. The biggest improvement of course, is the graphics. But the game also has good sound effects, and it is fun. The multiplayer mode rules supreme over all other Nintendo 64 games, except for maybe Goldeneye. The one player mode is awesome the first time you play it, however that brings up the only weakpoint i saw in MarioKart 64. Once you beat the game and get all the gold trophies, the replay value goes down to the basement. After you get all the gold trophies and know you're a great MarioKart driver, the only fun you will have out of this game is the multiplayer. The multiplayer mode where you can show your friends and your brothers that you're the best MarioKarter out there, never loses any of its fun. Overall, I would recommend getting this game just for the multiplayer mode because it's well worth it. Just too bad the one player part of the game doesn't have the replay value that the original did.

Mario Kart 64 is a very well made game. Good graphics, nice sound and most of all, fun! The game allows one to four players to join in the action. There are 16 racing games and four battle games of racing, mayhem, and Mario! One to two players can race for a Cup. There are four cups and four race tracks to go along with each cup. You can race by yourself for time trials but that's not much fun. Racing with friends is more fun and speaking of friends the battle mode is for two to four players only. One player can't play any of the four battle modes. The battle mode is where each player has 3 balloons. Every time players hit one of your balloons with a weapon, one balloon will fly away. But you can get back at them by doing the same. Once a player looses all of their balloons they lose. The last person still with balloon(s) is the winner. Your Go Kart drivers are almost all from the old Super Nintendo game,Super Mario Kart. Mario,Donkey Kong,Peach,Wario,Yoshi,Toad, and Luigi are your racing friends for this adventure. One of the first racing games the N64 has ever seen, this game is racing but with a friendly touch. No violence or unless you think getting hit by a shell is violent. This a fun game for the whole family to enjoy.

This has got to be the best cartoon racing game there is. I tried Diddy Kong Racing but it made me feel like a 3 year old. If you want a babyish racing game, go for DKR. If you want a real game with tons of replay, get MK64. My family and I often have competitions and all of us race on Vs. mode with our favorite characters. They usually make me be Donkey Kong because he is the slowest racer and they know I can beat them with anyone else. My favs are Luigi and Bowser. It's got excellent graphics and people from all ages can enjoy this masterpiece.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Mario Kart 64 (Video Game)
Driving around in a car on a computer using arrow keys is boring. You just get to see a stupid racing car going around on a race track, on a tiny computer screen. You need some excitement here!! First of all, you get to choose your favorite character: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, DK, Bowser, Toad, Wario or Peach. Then, you get to choose an antique course, and go for the cup! No course is quite the same, no matter how much you play it. I love how I can drive all over the course, with the other top three drivers, driving as fast as we can for the top place. It is wonderful how anyone can just sweep by everyone else and be in the lead, just with a click of a button and of course, an item. I have very fond memories of driving on Kalimari Desert, among the 1-3 top drivers. I was in 2nd, Peach in first, and Donkey Kong in 3rd. Even though I have played that course just about a bazillion times, that course is still as fun as ever, and not to mention as challenging! I highly recommend this game. Mario Kart 64 has brought a whole different world full of joy and delight for me, and it will for you and your family, too.

Review from a middle aged Mom, November 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Mario Kart 64 (Video Game)
Our son brought this game home from college more than 4 years ago and taught us how to play. My husband & I bought our own game unit and a Mario Kart game because when our son goes back to school, he takes Mario with him! When we are all together during school breaks, we all play this game together. Our older daughter, who is in her mid-twenties, joins us, and it is definitely part of our "family time". When the kids are not here, my husband & I play this game - sometimes he wins, sometimes I win. But we enjoy it very much.

I think this game is fun but can get boring after a while so iunderstand why it is a 4.5 star rating as it is now. I put fivebecause my whole family loves it. We have tournaments with four controlleres every other day. It would be nicer if this game could be faster or have some interesting twist like you are trying to beat something in diddi kong racing in which you try to beat the pig. Overall it is a good game for the whole family with 16 different courses.
