Editorial Reviews

Review

Starred Review, Publishers Weekly, March 12, 2012:
“Her [McElmurry] text and watercolor artwork capture the exuberance of the creative spirit alongside the quirks of a character accepting his limitations…the scenes will have readers longing for crisp autumn air.”

About the Author

More About the Author

The first books I remember loving are "Harold and the Purple Crayon" by Crockett Johnson and "Animal Fair" by Alice and Martin Provensen. I also loved "Ferdinand" by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson and "What Do You Say, Dear?" by Sesyle Joslin and Maurice Sendak. Later on I loved "Homer Price and the Donut Machine", "Alice in Wonderland", "Grimm's Fairy Tales", and one about bread dough that keeps rising and rising. I wish I could remember the name of it.
I've lived in 40 different houses in 20 different towns - in big towns and small towns, in mountains and valleys, beside the ocean and across the ocean, and now I live with my husband and dog on an acre in Albuquerque where there are 4 apple trees, 3 peach trees, 2 pear trees, 1 fig tree, and a lot of cacti. We also spend time in a tiny cabin on a tiny island in a big lake in northern Minnesota. We've named the island Good Dog Island in honor of all the good dogs we've known.

This is a charming picture book for all ages, in terms of both text and art. Hilarious dialogue between competitive friends as they perform high-flying acrobatics makes for a fun and highly original little piece of theatre.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Chris on January 2, 2013
Format: Hardcover
I am an aspiring elementary school teacher who has been building his classroom library. Books like Mario Makes a Move are exactly the type of books I want to fill my library with. The writing is humorous fun, engaging illustrations. When I am reading to students I want to read books that both they and I will enjoy, and Mario Makes a Move fits that bill. This book is most appropriate for children in the Kindergarten through 3rd grade age range.
