Sports With an Over-the-Top, Mario Twist

Mario Sports Mix is an arcade style sports game that pits your favorite Nintendo characters against each other in four action-packed sports genres. Sports include: basketball, dodgeball, volleyball and hockey. Hockey fans will enjoy the ability to play both on the ice, as well as on the field. Characters that players can expect to see include: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, Toad, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong and others that will be revealed in-game. Characters each possess general abilities, but also have particular play styles, some being faster, stronger, all-around stronger than others or more precise than others. In addition to this, players are able to disturb the play of opponents using Nintendo themed means, for instance koopa shells, banana peels and walking bombs. Each player also possesses their own nearly unstoppable special ability, which can be unleashed after they fill their individual power gauges. Also, players will collect coins and gather multipliers, bonuses and other special items as they play and also as they succeed against opponents.

Multiplayer Support

Although Mario Sports Mix can be enjoyed as a single player game, it is built from the ground up with multiplayer fun in mind. All sports featured in the game include both a local cooperative multiplayer option for up to four players, as well as a four-player competitive multiplayer option in two-on-two action. The game also features two-on-two online multiplayer against friends, or random players.

Key Game Features

  • Your favorite Nintendo characters battle in four sporting events: basketball, volleyball, hockey and dodgeball. The basic rules of the games remain in play, but each also includes special Nintendo flavored elements like coins and special items that ramp up the craziness and fun.
  • Along with standard play, gathering coins will build up bonus points. So when players score a point or basket, they also get the added bonus.
  • Players can collect items like a koopa shell to use against their opponents, even using special items to beat up on the other team while shooting or spiking.

  • Use a variety of tricks to keep opponents guessing at your next move.
  • Multiplayer support in every sport includes cooperative play with up to three friends or competitive action with up to four players in two-on-two matches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very fun game with good Online Play!!! February 9, 2011
By Brandon
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I don't understand why some people think this is a bad game because to me this game is very fun! This game is a blast if you have people to play with, and even if you don't Wi-Fi is great. Wi-Fi has a points system something like what Wii Sports has and if you get to 1000 you get a medal for that sport. There is alos little to no lag during online play. The game also has a lot to do for just 1 player. It will take you a while to unlock everything this game has to offer. Anyone who puts Dodgeball down has not played this game because it might be the best game on the disc! All 4 sports are well done and easy to play. I think this is an excellent title that any Wii owner and Mario fan should at least try out. The only thing this game lacks in for me is music. I thing they could have had much better music in this game, but this game to me is excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great group game March 4, 2011

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I have played this game with my kids (6 and 11). It is an excellent cooperative play game for a family or group. The controls are not too complex, good music & graphics and simple enough for younger kids to play successfully. My only complaint is that there are only 4 sports. I expected more for the price. We were hoping to unlock additional sports as we progressed, but have only unlocked additional locations. Still, it's good fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for my 6 year old, and 36 year old July 23, 2013
By Claire
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Perfect for my 6 year old. He is not able to play other Mario games, but the "easy" setting is indeed quite easy and he doesn't get frustrated with complicated controls. The husband plays along on the harder setting and he doesn't get too bored with it. The visuals are nice and colorful, and my son loves picking his characters, too.
I bought it on consignment for $10, and I think it's a steal... but if I had to pay full price for it, I would maybe be peeved that there are only 4 games to pick from. I could see how many would give this a 4 star for the hefty price tag, but my purchase was a 5 star.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun to a certain extent March 12, 2014

The games on here are traditionally children's games and after you play a few of each type (volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, basketball) this game doesn't appeal to you anymore. The online isn't popular and you end up playing the same person every time. The online is really laggy.

My son and his friends played this for the first time over the weekend and they totally loved it. They said it was "wicked fun". The graphics were cool and they were jumping around having a blast. Thanks Mario!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for me.. May 2, 2013

I purchased this game for my boyfriend and he played it a couple of times. When I played it, I found it hard to use the controls, there was a lot of stuff going on. I like the regular Super Mario Bros games much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Mario title for the Wii May 15, 2014
Verified Purchase
A very fun Mario (and sports) game even by Wii U and 3DS standards, each venue is well crafted and each character has their own stats. The game also rewards you just for playing as certain characters (win or lose) with outfits. Another cool thing about this game is that, being developed by Squaresoft, they put in multiple Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest characters to unlock, although some may find this irritating as they are the only ones you can unlock (all Mario characters are available at the start of the game, but I've heard rumors about unlocking Rosalina from Mario Galaxy.) I can't think of a reason for someone not to try this.
