5.0 out of 5 stars About a Historical Period I Love More Than Any Other, August 28, 2007
This review is from: Marion Zimmer Bradley's Ravens of Avalon: A Novel (MP3 CD)

Marion Zimmer was born in Albany, NY, on June 3, 1930, and married Robert Alden Bradley in 1949. Mrs. Bradley received her B.A. in 1964 from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, then did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965-67. Writing for over 4 decades, she is best known for her Darkover science fantasy series and her Avalon series. She also edited anthologies for 14 years and published Marion Zimmer Bradley's FANTASY Magazine.

Reading a new novel with the name of an author on it who in fact died in 1999 seems a little surreal, but the book itself to all intents and purposes has the same `feel' to it as all Marion Zimmer Bradley's other books. Perhaps this is attributable to the skills of Diana L. Paxson.

The book is a different look at the life of Boudica, the Iceni queen and follows the journey of a Celtic princess, Boudica and Lhiannon, a priestess, who is Boudica's mentor on the island of Druids. When Britain is conquered by the Romans, Lhiannon continues to fight them with everything in her power. Boudica is married to a king who has surrendered, but when he dies the Romans ill treat both her and her daughters.

In a rage Boudica insights all of the British tribes who sympathise with her and she almost succeeds in driving the Roman army from Britain . . .
