A Mario game where you fill the blanks? Amazing........,

Mario's Time Machine wasn't a really perfect game on the NES, but it provided us with classic Mario gameplay in a twist in which it tries to help teach us about history. It has dumb moments, but it's at least decent. The Super Nintendo version, on the other hand, strips away the classic Mario gameplay aspect.
Instead of having to fight Koopas in a Mario Bros stage, you pick an artifact (that you must return to the time period) right away. But as the time machine comes down, you don't choose a time period like in the NES version. Instead, you ENTER THE DIGITS YOURSELF, with BC and AD required. What were they thinking?? After you choose your period, you go surfing, which had to replace the Koopa scene. The surfing thing is even less winnable or playable than the Koopa scene, though. You have to collect mushrooms and dodge urchins, right? Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well, no. You can almost rarely tell the difference between the two. After that, you finally reach your destination. So do you go around kicking off Koopas and returning the artifact? Nope. Instead, you have to go talk to people and fill out blanks in sentences. You actually HAVE to be taught this stuff to know which word goes in the right blanks. It is annoying. Why should there be a Mario game with FILLING OUT BLANKS and TALKING TO PEOPLE FROM THE PAST? Why not feature the Koopa bashing that Mario was known for in his sidescrollers? Overall, this game is only for people whose brains are meant to know only history. For those who want an educational game with traditional Mario action, go play the NES version.

Ok, yes it is cheesy but this game was awesome back when it first came out and I'm glad that I was able to get it. While a user manual is needed, a simple google search provided one quickly. Basically, Mario travels through time returning stuff that Bowser stole. The player has to input information about historical events. It's a good way to get the family involved and learn at the same time. Why don't they make an updated version for the playstation or wii systems?

The SNES was a good era for Mario, as some of his best games came out then. Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, All Stars, Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG...you get my point. But there were a few stinkers as well. Five games for this console were released, not developed by Nintendo, that used Mario as some sort of learning tool, changing the gameplay and usually the average storyline completely. The thing is about this game, it's just not fun.
As with all Mario games, the story is simple. Bowser, for whatever reason, takes a break from princessnapping and instead builds a time machine, which he uses to steal important items in history. As Mario, you must recover the items and give them back to the historical figures. You start out in a hallway with five historical objects on pedestals, and when you grab them, you must answer a fill-in-the-blank essay about the history of the period of the object, with many answers to choose from. If you get the wrong answer three times, you have to start all over again. If you did not commit ritualistic suicide after doing this horrible activity, it is now time to return the object. You select the date and place of the historical event, and then you are warped to a mini-game, which is not fun, either. You have to surf around, collecting a lot of mushrooms while avoiding spikes, which make you lose mushrooms, and whirpools. Once you get all the mushrooms, you fall into a whirlpool, which for some reason takes you to that time period. There you simply find the historic person and give him/her the object back. Nope, no kicking Koopa shell in the 1700's here, folks. Repeat the painstaking process multiple times until you get to Bowser, who you don't even fight. So yeah, avoid this game like the plague. The only education you'll get from this is that educational games and popular video game figures don't mix. I also swore I played a Sonic educational game one time...

Call me crazy, I love this game! The story is great! Mario has to stop Bowser from stealing important objects from history before Bowser changes the present times... FOREVER! You just go into the past, talk to people to find out who to give the stolen artifacts to whoever made, owns, or had it (you have to answer questions about history), and you give the object to that person! It's hard but fun! Besides, it's Mario!

I bought this game back in July of 1994. First you set the time machine for the date and place you need to go. Next it shows you riding a jetski on the lake. There are mushrooms on the lake. Grab ten of the mushrooms and drive your jetski into one of the portals. This will take you to the times and places you need to go.
I bought this game because it was a time travel game but it was a disappointment. When you travel places, you have to answer questions like a test at school. You do no fighting of any kind. There is no action in it. MTM would probably be great for children because it's educational. But I seriously don't recommend it for adults. This and Timeslip are the two worst time travel games made.

The game isn't remotely like any other Mario game. Regardless, I always found myself enjoying the game.
