Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Chalk up the unevenness and overall mediocrity of Mariposa, the third album from Tejano star Jennifer Peña, to growing pains. The talented teen seems stuck in the rote sounds of today's Tejano music--sleepy accordions, weepy vocals, sing-song choruses. The album starts out promisingly with the first single, "Tengo Miedo," but it quickly dissipates into an awkward blend of standard radio cumbias, mariachi numbers, and dance-floor ditties. Peña's voice is still strong and focused, but the album has no concrete direction. Coproducers Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Brian "Red" Moore give the young star little to work with. Particularly out of place is "Chica Preferida" (whose English version, "Let Me Be the One," is also included), a club track that seems out of place and sounds laughably outdated. Peña deserves better than this. --Joey Guerra

4.0 out of 5 stars Mariposa highlights a changing singer, January 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mariposa (Audio CD)
It is true that as Jennifer has grown up, she has tended to dress more provocatively. This trend for female singers has been going on for decades now. Lose the clothes, or watch album sales fizzle. One only has to look at Shakira, Paulina Rubio, and Thalia to see that it is not only Britney Spears who is exposing herself in order to get, well, media exposure. Jennifer's vocal abilities are certainly in the same category as any of the above-named singers. It is difficult to believe that Jennifer recorded this album when she was fourteen/fifteen years old. Her vocal abilities are equal to those of Paulina Rubio and Thalia, both of whom are in their late 20s or early 30s. In the end, this album will mainly be remembered for the exceptional song, "Tengo Miedo", a tribute to teenage girls and the pressures they face to grow up too early. The song is definitely one of Jennifer's most meaningful.
Back to the clothing issue: I certainly hope that Jennifer is not dressing provocatively simply to sell more albums and make more money. As the daughter of a prominent doctor, Jennifer should be more concerned about raising artistic standards and respect for Tejano music than simply making money. If her singing career ended tomorrow, she could still do whatever she wanted with her life, with Daddy's money. Most other people don't have such a charmed life. Jennifer should take advantage of her unique circumstances and become an artist who is recognized for her wonderful music, instead of for her skimpy outfits.
