4.0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Jr. clone ??!?!, April 28, 2005
This review is from: Mariposa (Audio CD)
I never read any reviews of Mariposa or their first album Broc's Cabin, but anyone who hears Dinosaur Jr. in these albums is on crack or at very least shouldn't be writing reviews professionally... About the only thing these bands had in common was that they were both guitar oriented alt/indy bands, in my opinion.

I enjoyed both of Rein Sanction's albums thoroughly. Lots of tremolo picked guitars and involved basslines and some highly proficient drumming. My only complaint with this band was that they seemed to have two styles (electric, fast tempo, kind of dark sounding and acoustic, fast tempo, kind of dark sounding) and all of their songs fit pretty neatly into one of these styles. Still worth picking up, IMHO, just for the virtuosity of the performances ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice album and not much like another band of the era, March 7, 2005
This review is from: Mariposa (Audio CD)
The fact that this band was dismissed at the time by many critics as being nothing more than a Dinosaur Jr. copy-cat is in my opinion rather stupid. The singer displays none of the bratty moan of J. Mascis. However; the lyrics are interesting and the band plays some messy, ramshackle music and this is a trait in common with Dinosaur Jr. but that's good right?. The guitar playing is studded with detailed filigree all along the line and this differs markedly from you know who. Recommended!
