Book Description

Some people never grow up, and there are some people you never grow out of no matter how hard you try.

She’s irrational. He’s crass. She wanted out of South Boston. He never wanted to leave. She keeps him at a distance. He refuses to leave her side. Together, Colleen Frasier and Bradley Patrick are ridiculous and juvenile. Apart, they’re just plain miserable.

While Detective Bradley Patrick was keeping the streets of South Boston safe, Colleen Frasier was busy litigating late into the evening and admiring the view from her high-rise condo downtown. Her life was perfect– sort of. She spent too much time drinking her high-priced lattes and acquiring an impressive shoe collection and before she knew it she was 35 and time for all that other stuff she wanted, like a husband and children, was quickly passing her by. And then there’s that longtime rift that’s kept her and her childhood best friend, Bradley Patrick, at odds for over a decade.

All of that changes on Colleen’s 35th birthday when she receives a surprise marriage proposal from Brad. One night. One birthday wish. Trouble is, he brings out the worst in Colleen. She can’t possibly marry him, can she? She’s never been very good at saying “no” to him, either. What was supposed to end the next day with an annulment takes on a life of its own when video of the wedding ends up on the internet and their families are overjoyed by the news. Fearing the shame of her Catholic family, Colleen has a proposal of her own: pretend the marriage is for real– and Brad is all too willing to play the doting husband.

A line of romance novels with spunk! New city, new love, new characters, and new adventures– all with the classic heat you expect in your romance. From silly to suspenseful, each MEN WITH BADGES book features a hot new male lead. He may not always be in uniform, but he always carries a badge.

Check out THE SWITCH, book two in the Men with Badges series, at the end of Marital Bitch!

About the Author

As a child, JC was fascinated by things that went bump in the night. As they say, some things never change. Now, as an adult, she divides her time between the sexy law men, mythical creatures, and kick-ass heroines that live inside her head and pursuing her bachelor's degree in English. JC is a San Francisco Bay Area native, but has also called both Texas and Louisiana home. These days she rocks her flip flops year round in Northern California and can't imagine a climate more beautiful. JC writes adult, new adult, and young adult fiction. She dabbles in many different genres including science fiction, horror, chick lit, and murder mysteries, yet she is most enthralled by supernatural stories-- and everything has at least a splash of romance.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shocked at the other reviews. March 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
How have 88 people reviewed this as a five star read? Did they get a different version of the story than I did? Honestly, I am completely befuddled.

First, let me say that I am an avid reader and romance is my favorite genre. I have no problem suspending disbelief so that strange or out-of-this-world things can happen in order that our hero and heroine enjoy a fabulous HEA. But the numerous typographical and grammatical errors kept throwing me out of the story. I am a bit of a self-declared grammar nazi, but I tend to give a wide berth to eBooks, self-published books, and free downloads. I can overlook the use of an incorrect homophone, misused punctuation, and even liberties taken with regards to the meaning of words. But here's what drives me bonkers - an adult, a writer no less, who does not know the difference between THEN and THAN, OF and HAVE, and who cannot correctly choose the use of YOUR and YOU'RE. Everyone makes mistakes, and things slip by editors, but halfway through the book I'd grown so frustrated with the overabundant errors that I just started to highlight some of the more egregious as I continued to read.

The only reason I stuck with this story is that I'm one of those people that is cursed with the obsessive need to finish any story I start, no matter how horrible it becomes. The author leaves out and misuses words throughout the story. Here are a couple of examples, and this is by no definition an exhaustive list:

I'm hope you're not really planning on having 12 children, Colleen.

I have no intention of any of them right; so I'm going to try.

I think we're working on some sort of record myself that I would try in mine and Brad's marriage.

She smiles at little - just enough to look sincere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Grow Up! March 7, 2013

I also cannot stomache this book. Both main characters are 35 years old but act like they are 16. I got tired of their juvenile relationship. If I had wanted a book on the trials and tribulations of high schoolers I would have bought one. I will not be purchasing any more books from this author or this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Gold Stars March 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I can thoroughly exclaim that this was a GOOD READ. As I read a lot of romance novels that include insta-love, overly-sentimental chicks, unrealistically debonair or extreme Alpha-type men, and/or a predictable plot-line, Marital Bitch was a breath of fresh air.

The premise of the book included a group of childhood friends from Boston going to Vegas to celebrate Colleen's birthday. Colleen is a sophisticated, type-A, career-oriented Harvard law school grad - oft embarrassed of her humble Boston roots, most specifically, her accent! Her male best friend is Brad, a ball-scratching, snoring, burping Boston cop that fully embraces his upbringing, for better or worse. They are complete opposites and usually end up arguing with one another. Brad and Colleen have denied their romantic inclinations for quite some time. However, both are realizing that maybe they don't just love each other, maybe they're actually in love with each other. While in Vegas, a comical chain of events forces the friends to explore their feelings together.

This book was free on Amazon and I was amazed at how much I loved it. I personally related to Colleen, as we have similar personalities - focused on advancing our careers, personal life taking a back seat, and brushing off embarrassing blights from our childhoods (even if that includes immature friends). I'm also a bit crazy, an occasional disgusting slob, and prone to break out of my sophisticated facade via random outbursts of immaturity. I liked that the author painted Colleen as a regular woman that has good days and bad days. She loves Brad but is deathly afraid to actually admit it. She ends up resorting to inane antics to get his attention.

1.0 out of 5 stars Could not finish...did not like it March 13, 2013
By DinaC
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The reason for 1 star not 2 was because I had less than zero desire to even finish it.

It is not very often I go and actually look up my kindle manager to delete, but I made an exception for this one.

Colleen is horrible, I don't know why anyone likes her. Why would you call people your best friends that you so obviously look down on. If you think their accent is uncouth along with everything else about being blue collar.

This also seemed to want to paint blue collar as idiots and very crass. It was like every stereo type come to life.

Pass Pass Pass!

5.0 out of 5 stars A diamond in the rough!! February 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I absolutely loved this book! I'm not even sure how I stumbled onto it but I am so happy that I did! There are a few minor editing issues (spelling and inconsistency with descriptive things like eye color) but those can be easily overlooked when the story is this amazing!
Brad and Colleen are both born and raised in South Boston. Best friends since they were in diapers they are both Irish Catholics with insane tempers, big nosy interfering families and stubborn streaks a mile wide. They disagree and openly fight about anything and everything but they are unable to live without each other. Their story is filled with laugh out loud humor and whether they are fighting or making love, sparks are flying.
It's been a long time since I read a book by a self published indie author that I felt this strongly about! This one really resonated with me! J C Emery has talent! I felt as if I really knew these people instead of just reading about them. 5 stars!!
