Review

Fado Diva MARIZA has wowed the world with her scintillating performances. Here is what the three leading newspapers in the USA have to say about her performances in their respective cities: Like any traditional folk music, Portuguese fado has its purists and its iconoclasts. Only the most agile performers can negotiate the middle ground. Mariza, the Lisbon contralto who performed Friday night at Carnegie Hall, brings a modernsensibility to the form, a cafe-music blend of Gypsy, Jewish, Arabic and Andalusian influences sometimes called the Portuguese blues. -- New York Times

Most of the time, concerts are simply a way for performers to bring music to where their fans are. But on rare occasions, the best artists are able to transport listeners to other realms -- a different culture, a faraway place or the musician's own inner space. At all these levels, Portuguese singer Mariza swept away her audience Wednesday night during an entrancing show at UCLA's Royce Hall. For two hours, the arresting vocalist demonstrated why she has emerged as one of the most acclaimed exponents of her country's emblematic music known as fado,...Mariza'smarvelous voice clearly communicated themeaning, especially themelancholy, loss and loneliness. ....The suspenseful pauses were often followed by cathartic vocal explosions that demonstrated her stunning vocal range and control. -- Los Angeles Times

The traditional Portuguese music known as fado is not for the timid. Passionate and uninhibited, it revels in drama, diving recklessly into the dark pathos of the human heart. In the hands of its best interpreters, fado's power can be primal and almost overwhelming -- and it's starting to catch on with audiences around the world. Much of the credit for that goes to Mariza,...she's been reinventing the traditional fado style, and the results - as she showed at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on Friday night -- are nothing short of spectacular..... her voice sweeping effortlessly from searing cries to whispered confessions. -- Washington Post

Having owned and been very happy with the two prior Mariza DVD's I was very pleasantly surprised to find that this DVD had been released. Unfortunately, this DVD's audio mastering is the worst quality I have yet had the displeasure of owning. I am a big fan of Mariza and am shocked at how badly this DVD was done. On the plus side Mariza is a wonderful performer as always and her band is great, those things can be seen in the performance.

Buy Concerto em Lisboa or Mariza Live in London.. both are far superior to this disaster.

One of those ironies where such a great voice and performance is compromised by bad sound engineering. Her voice, of all things, is often overloaded.
