Book Description

If Mark Cavendish did not exist, what mind could invent him? In a world of homogenized sportspeople, he is a welcome one-off. Volatile, demanding, unwilling to hide his emotions, desperate to establish himself as one of cycling's all‑time greats, disinclined to suffer fools but keen to exploit every opportunity to promote a sport he loves for itself and its history as much as for what it has brought him. And, right now, our very best. This collection of the Guardian's finest sports writing charts the rise of the phenomenon that is Cav, from his early professional appearances to 2011's Green Jersey triumph.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Manx Missile in Review April 30, 2012
Verified Purchase
The concept of the digitally published instant book has many advantages and two of them shine through in Mark Cavendish on the Top of the World. The first is that here is a good example of a collection of stories for people who love cycling but don't read newspapers. The stories are excellent and can stand alone but when they are linked together form a solid narrative of one of the world's most sought after cyclists. The second is that because the book doesn't have to go through a long publishing process you end up with up to date material that is still relevant at the moment you are reading it.

As for Cavendish, he's a fascinating character. Sympathetic, inspiring, dramatic and amazingly fast, the Manx missile makes history almost every time he climbs on a bike. After catching up on his life in this book I'm interested in learning even more.
