5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant compilation of Mark's early years, October 5, 2002
This compilation covers the period 1989 to 1996, so anybody looking for I don't want to miss a thing (from 1999) should look elsewhere. Instead, what you get here are a dozen brilliant songs, over half of which were #1 country hits, deservedly so.

The best track here is Too cold at home, a real tearjerker of the kind George Jones is remembered for. Mark does this extremely well. Other great ballads here include Ol' country and I'll think of something.

Mark can also do the upbeat songs too, though some of these are actually quite sad, the musical backing hiding what the song is really about. Typical of these is Brother Jukebox, a song first recorded by Don Everly in the mid-seventies, which is about the emptiness of a man's life. Another song in this vein is Going through the Big D, about losing everything in a divorce. Both of these have upbeat, driving music.

Despite a string of #1 hits, Mark never achieved the level of success that some of his contemporaries did. However, he certainly made some great music and this compilation is well worth a listen if you enjoy nineties country, especially if you like Alan Jackson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing, January 28, 2000
By Pete Kic (York, Ontario) - See all my reviews
Mark has really done a great job putting this CD together...they are all great country songs. The only problem with this album is it's missing one great song...the song....I just wanted you to know. I'm surprised that Mark would forget such a successful song. However, this song is exceptional...way to go Mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ballads to honkeytonk M C pulls those heart strings, April 2, 1999
By A Customer
This album has some of the best country songs in the business. Mark sings songs straight from his heart. There are songs for every occasion from the slow ballads like "Too cold at home", "I'll think of something else", and "Almost goodbye" to the fast, heels kicking "Bubba shot the jukebox", and "Going through the big 'd'". These songs are about real life realtionships and how they affect the heart. So if you're in the mood to cry about that lost love or smile now that they're gone this is the album for you.
