Editorial Reviews

Mark Farner is best known as the guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad. Once that group broke up, he issued two solo albums. The eponymous "Mark Farner" was issued in 1977 and features Dick Wagner. No Frills was issued in 1978. Both of these albums are making their worldwide CD debuts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Grand Funk solo effort needs a little more "oomph"!, July 11, 2009

This review is from: Mark Farner (Audio CD)
Mark Farner's first solo album from the '70's. No real memorable moments or grandstanding but a decent work out nonetheless. It won't win any new converts but should please the die-hard Grand Funk fan searching for examples of Mark's more insightful moments.

The album starts off with "Dear Miss Lucy", a not-so-subtle commentary about a V.D.-ridden groupie whose exploits leave entire towns in need of inocculation. Beefed up a little this tune would not have been out of place on the typical Grand Funk record.

The only other standout for me was the mellow "Easy Breezes" where he waxes nostalgic about the Summers of his youth and the 'good life' on his Uncle Jack's farm.

I expected Farner's first solo LP to have a lot stronger material considering the weaker songs Grand Funk was settling for in the mid-70's. Apparently, he wasn't holding out on 'em. And these selections aren't bad but they aren't exactly barn burners either.

But, considering this was a '70's-era solo album, at least he didn't veer off into the realm of side-long 'concept' songs or other self-indulgences...though at times it would have been fun to hear him and veteran sideman Dick Wagner really get heavy or off-the-cuff.

Totally slick formulaic crap, with way too many sappy ballads, from the recently unemployed Grand Funk leader. Anti-rock for sure. I have no desire to ever hear this again.

Nothing compared with the work with Grand Funk Railroad.I supose that Mark was missing his mate from GFR.The heavy soud is completely absent from this album.Forget it.
