Book Description

At the forefront in the battle for good and evil, Thaddeus Kane straddles the line between heaven and hell.

Abandoned as a baby and raised by demons Kane doesn't flinch from his responsibilities as a troubleshooter for the demon clan that saved his life. He embraces each job with only one rule. No targeting innocents. Not a popular stance given his associates, but one he won't break for anyone. Fortunately, his unique abilities provide him with just enough leverage to stand his ground.

When human sorcerers target his clan for death to harness their demonic superpowers, Kane's skills leave him the sole candidate to root out the threat. In a hunt through the dangerous occult layers that blanket Los Angeles it is his secret alliance with a rival demoness, to save seemingly human teenagers from the same horrible fate, which will stretch his powers and allegiances to the breaking point.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true must read urban fantasy May 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm always excited when I discover a new writer. LW Herndon is a new find. The Mark of Kane (A Thaddeus Kane Novel) is one such find.

The story starts as it means to go, an adrenaline rush with some quiet moments. LW kept me on my toes throughout the book. I was never sure what would happen next.

Kane is a half-breed, human/demon, or is he? He's on the hunt for human sorcerers bent on power. They are killing (draining their victims of their power and life force) demons and young humans or worse. To say more will be a spoiler. However, I will say the demons are multi-layered and as with Kane, not what they seem.

But these sorcerers didn't count on Kane, the bloodhound for his demon clan. He is charged with finding and destroying the sorcerers. He lives by his own rules: save his clan, protect innocents, and survive. All that is put at risk when he's solicited by a demon from another clan to save humans who are prophetic children, the Irins and then shock, wizards. In this world, wizards have always become sorcerers. Not if Kane can prevent it. He's out to save the children and train the budding wizards thus protecting them from sorcerers.

This is a wonderfully told story of how appearances are deceptive and sometimes your life is a lie. This book isn't a romance. It's a true urban fantasy--one that sucks you in and holds you tight until the last word. The ending left me with my mouth open and wanting more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Demon with a conscience August 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is one bad-a$$ demon (or half demon). He's caught between the human world and a world that humans don't even want to know about. Thaddeus Kane is on a mission to save some innocents who have no idea of how powerful they are and ow much they threaten the balance of power in the otherworld. Kind of a cliched plot but there is nothing cliched abut Kane's character. Kane is one of the best anti-heroic hero's I've read in a long while. It's as if he doesn't want to go about saving humans (ans he really doesn't) but he can't seem to help himself. Being half human and half demon, Kane can't fight the half of him that still possesses a soul. This book is filled with references to Western religion, Eastern spirituality, magic and sorcery. Something for everyone, really. Rather than alienate the reader, the references serve to expand the scope of what happens outside of out normal lives.
Kane's relationships with his demon partners Chaz and Decibel remind you of comedic duos of the old Hollywood era. Here they are fighting otherworld crime and they're taking verbal shots at each other. Great stuff. Aside from Chaz and Decibel, Kane has to deal with a Shalim, his master, who would rather not have him around if he could just find a way to kill him. Basically, Kane is unwanted by just about everyone but he rolls with the punches.
The paranormal novels that I read are usually PR, but I really liked this book, nonetheless. Great characters like those found in Showalter's and Ward's work.

Readers of the paranormal/fantasy genre will enjoy this book. It is a great read and on par with the work of many well known fantasy/supernatural authors. The main character Thaddeus Kane "TK" is half human and half demon, which should mean that he has it easy in both worlds. Wrong far from it, accepted by neither society he still feels the obligation to fulfill his demon clans rules, whilst at the same time dealing with his humanity and compassion. Those two issues are a paradox and cause him a lot of pain and trouble. A demon from another clan ropes him into finding and protecting children of the Irin, who are Immortal but don't know it. The only problem is they are being killed one by one. This is one of those books you don't want to end, because it is so enjoyable. It is also one that needs a sequel, so the writer needs to hurry up and finish the next one. I highly recommend this book.I received a free copy of this book for my review. The Mark of Kane (A Thaddeus Kane Novel)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It May 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Thaddeus Kane has lived his life serving others. Abandoned at a young age, he had no choice but to succumb to Shalim, the leader of the demon clan that found him one day. Granted, his existence has never been a happy one, but he's made sure to show those around him that he's quite capable of living up to the clan's standards. He harbors a strong will to live and will do anything to make sure he doesn't check out early.

Tasked with searching for every single sorcerer and putting a stop to their sordid plans, Thaddeus is good at what he does. With the help of his trusty sidekick, Chaz, he's never deterred from the missions he's undertaken. Until now, that is. An unexpected source has alerted him to the sorcerer's activities and Thaddeus is hell-bent on discovering what their current purpose is.

Taking matters into his own hands, he sets off to decipher just what it is that they're up to, knowing quite well that he's risking his master's wrath in the process. Yet he knows he cannot deny his source the aid she requires and he'll do everything possible to ensure that the prophetic children are kept safe. Their survival is the key to discovering the depths to which the sorcerers have sunk.

Gathering the children as he goes about in accruing the needed intel to stop the sorcerers within their tracks, he's surprised that he truly does want to keep them safe. The discovery of several wizards amongst the group does throw an unexpected kink into their plans. If he's able to help them learn what they need to know about who, and what, they are, they may just prove to be a blessing in disguise. But first Thaddeus needs to ensure their ultimate survival if they're to succeed in taking down the Consortium, once and for all.
